School Travel Plan

Hill of Beath Primary is a co-educational, non-denominational, school built in 1890. It was completely refurbished in 1992 when a new gym/dining hall and classroom were added. More recently, school and nursery capacity was extended with the addition of a purpose-built nursery at a nearby site and a new classroom to the main school building.

The school and nursery are situated on opposite sides of the Main Street in the village of Hill Of Beath, on the outskirts of Cowdenbeath.

There are currently 7 school classes (P1 – 7) and 3 nursery classes. The nursery caters for children aged 3 – 5yrs and operates year round. Sessions available include 8am – 12:40pm (49 weeks), 9am – 3pm (term-time only) & 1:20 – 6pm (49 weeks). The school currently has 185 pupils, and the nursery has capacity for 72 pupils. Please contact the school office; phone number: 01383602414, e-mail: hillofbeathps.enquiries@fife.gov.uk for enrolment enquiries.

There is no designated parking at the school. Visitors are advised to use the nursery car park or to use parking spaces in the streets around the school. The school has been given permission from The Hill Of Beath Ex-Serviceman’s Club Committee for parents to use their car park to drop-off/pick-up children before or after school. Using this car park means that children can enter the school through the back gate and avoid the busy main road. There is a disabled parking space on Swinton’s Place (at the back entrance to the school) and disabled access is available just off the main playground area to the rear of the school. All areas of the nursery are fully accessible.

The school has pedestrian and vehicular gates. Vehicles are not permitted to enter the playground when pupils are out playing, and pupils are encouraged not to use vehicular gates. All gates are closed and supervised during pupils’ breaktimes. Visitors are asked to avoid entering/entering the playground at these times if possible.

Bicycle storage is available for older pupils who wish to cycle to school. There is capacity for 12 bikes. Pupils taking bikes to school are expected to wear cycle helmets for their protection/safety and to walk their bikes through the playground.
