School Houses

Does Hill of Beath Primary school have a house system?
Yes. Hill of Beath Primary School operates a house system. There are 4 houses, each named after a Scottish tree species native to the local area. The houses are each represented by a colour; Rowan (Red), Willow (Blue), Ash (Green) and Hawthorn (Yellow).

Why use a house system?
1) House systems are used in school to help build pupil relationships across year groups and to instil a sense of belonging to a team and working together to support each other/gain rewards.
2) By using a well defined tariff for points, pupils are clear about the approaches that are expected of them eg following school values. House points are a very tangible way to motivate pupils’ and to reward their efforts.
3) By sharing focussed targets, parents can develop an understanding of what ‘good learning habits’ look like at Hill of Beath PS and can discuss this with children/staff.

How does it work?
When pupils enrol they are assigned a house and can start earning points for their house by following school values and/or displaying positive attributes. Children in families are all assigned the same house. Tokens are issued to represent house points and the group that gathers most tokens over a school week is declared to be the ‘winning house’. Each week children in the winning house are given a privilege. Winning houses for each term are rewarded, and the overall winning house for the year wins the house trophy and everyone in that house gets a special treat.
