Social Services and Healthcare (SSH)

The Foundation Apprenticeship is made up of 9 units.

There are 5 theory-based units called National Progression Awards (NPAs) and the other part (4 units) of the Apprenticeships is a work-based Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ).

SVQs are work-based qualifications which assess the skills and knowledge needed to do a particular job. Most candidates who undertake this type of qualification already have a job and carry out this qualification while working.  For FA candidates this work will be about placement experiences.

SVQs are nationally recognised qualifications that are considered as relevant when applying to further education and are benchmark qualifications for registration with the SSSC.

SVQs are made up of several units. Four units will be undertaken as part of the Foundation Apprenticeship.  These units are made up of National Occupational Standards (NOS) where practice, and knowledge are measured against.

Each unit includes several Performance Criteria (what you did) and Knowledge Statements (why you practiced in a particular way).

SVQ Units

  • Support effective communication
  • Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
  • Develop your own knowledge and practice
  • Support the safeguarding of individuals

NPAs are the theory based modules undertaken as part of an FA.

Within the health and social care sector it is vital that all workers have underpinning knowledge which links to their practice in the workplace. This is to ensure correct standards are met; individuals are safe, heard, and cared for; and that workers know why they have to do things a certain way.

The NPAs also provide an underpinning knowledge for the SVQ units. They introduce key learning, an understanding of values and support the development of skills necessary to work in this sector.

NPA Units

  • Social Services in Scotland
  • Communication in care relationships
  • Safeguarding people
  • Safe practice and wellbeing in social services
  • Human development and social influences

This qualification prepares pupils for possible future employment or further educational opportunities.
