Week Beginning 25th August 2025

Monday

Today  some have been identifying primary colours and matching colours. In the home corner there has been lots role playing the home life of parents caring for children such as feeding and tucking  into bed. Whilst looking  after the dolls  they have been using their fine motor skills to dress and undress.

Tuesday

Today the art area was very busy with interest of mixing primary colours to discover the changes whilst using different techniques to paint. Some have been developing friendships listening and dancing to nursery rhymes. Some children have been role playing daily home lives of washing dishes and cooking “tea.”

Wednesday

A couple of children spotted a honey bee. With modelling how to care for nature this sparked a conversation leading with many questions and suggestions. What do you need when you have been very busy running and are feeling very hot ? E “Need water” Discussing looking after and respecting nature to allow the bee to have a drink safely to help with energy and fly away again. J- then suggested the bee “maybe go see mummy.”

A couple of children have been developing their balance and confidence through risk play using the logs to jump and balance.

Thursday

There was a lot of excitement due to the heavy rain,  all children sharing space well with one another as they splashed.

At the outdoor music area a child was able to share playing “Happy Birthday”  and  “Twinkle Twinkle.” The  children have been developing their communication skills through taking turns. Exploring different tempos and sounds.

Friday

Fun filled Friday! Today there has been lots of water play, developing co-ordination and discovering how water travels by selecting different methods to fill and pour.  Some children have been exploring the woodwork bench selecting different tools and discovering their functions.

Some children’s first full week at Ferryport, lots of exploring and discovering all areas of the nursery. Developing friendships as they learn through play.

Week beginning 4th August

Monday

Today there was lots of different gym equipment in the hall which all most of of the children created their own games developing their imagination using the equipment as circuits, used as propts to role playing dinosaurs and the floor is lava.

 

Tuesday

As a group the children created a hopscotch game in. One of the children was able to write 1-10 in sequence. The game created discussion developing turn taking and sharing fairly with one another.

Wednesday

One child was role playing their birthday celebration from last week using play dough to create a birthday cake and singing 🎶 Happy Birthday🎶  Then observing and counting the amount people in the room the cake was divided for a fair share. 🍰 Using lavender to design different decorations and using sprinkle technique.

A of couple of the children created a tower designing a complex design and discussing safety and using descriptive language “It’s wobbly.”

Thursday

Today a child asked to make a bird. A discussion lead into oragami and the meaning of this. Some other children joined and were able to listen and follow the step by step guide. 🦁🐅 The rest were busy making paper aeroplanes and problem solving how to increase their distance using mathematical language and problem solving skills.

Friday

Today one child continued their interest of oragami selecting a “cat.” The child then creatively designed and developed features and details. The guide was then not needed and the hold successfully created the rest independently. Most of the children used the reels to jump and balance sharing and discussing where safest place to place their feet.  This risky play allowed the children to risk asses their movement. In the gym hall all children used different body movements to dance to the music.

 

Week Beginning 19 March 2025

Monday

A couple of children have been creating  necklaces developing their fine motor skills to thread, discussing size, colour and shapes.

Today some of the children used coloured cellophane to make glasses/masks. Discovering that everything looks different when looking through the cellophane. They then used them to investigate and explore the garden.

Tuesday

Some of the children have been continuing their interest in jewellery   making. A few have been playing basket ball developing their confidence and resilience skills. There has been an interest in mark making and developing awareness of the alphabet.

Today at beach a new rule had been created to care for the wild life as there were ducks near by. The children were intrigued and asked lots of questions of the function of the water sport they seen.

Wednesday

Transition visit to Tayport primary for nursery leavers sparked an exciting conversation on their return discussing their tour around the school.

 

Using magnetic letters to explore and discovering signalong for letters. ‘What’s in the bag’ created discussions of favourite songs developing confidence and adapting names to personalise the songs.

Thursday

A very busy Thursday, first we had the P6 junior support leaders join us to supported the children during their last practice for sports day. After gym we had a visit from Pauline (previous local librarian) who visited with Bookbug.

Outside a group have been busy looking after the garden, weeding and watering the plants. Lots of discussions about what plants need to grow and noticing that the herbs all smell different.  A child shared it had been National Bumble bee Day this week🐝🐝 they then helped to create a water station for the bees in the nursery garden. We’re excited to see what wildlife will use it.

Friday

This morning we had a farewell snack for our catering member of staff Lynsey which helped the children to understand the transition by asking questions. A child created a “castle” with adult support to introduce new mathematical language ‘symmetrical’. with the blocks who then shared with peers for dramatic role play “I’m the queen.”

We had a very successful sponsored nursery rhyme time which the children were able to recite 13 songs/rhymes within 3 minutes! Some children have been adding materials to clothing to create rockets. Whilst a group of children were working together to fill turf tray with water using different objects….. and off course splash in!

Week Beginning 31 March 2025

Monday

Taking ownership of safety, a small group of children worked together communicating responsibilities for garden check. One child volunteered to  “mark” make the risk assessment whilst the rest of the children were able to compromise by selecting who would chose which area of the garden t check. Developing communication skills to been feed back the information to be checked off and organising themselves through agreements.

Tuesday

At the building block area a couple of children made a “head quarters” each child had a different role to help construct the building. Designing the roof using bamboo sticks sparked a conversation to problem solve the structure. A couple of children set up  their own stage to perform – signing and dancing. By encouraging and supporting their peers helped to develop confidence.

Wednesday

At beach today a couple of children discovered writing on a bench and asked “what does that say?” Showing awareness of print, this lead to a discussion of remembering people who have past away and the meaning of the numbers. Some children shared their stories of passed family members. At nursery a couple of children created sandcastles using loose parts and materials to create and design- discussing the different heights and the wet sand representing the water at the beach.

Thursday

At gym today everyone was developing their developing their listening skills and following instructions through “Simon Says our listening skills and took leadership in our game of Simon says giving an instruction each to the whole group. We had our first practice for sports day taking turns and working in teams. For cool down we focussed on stretching discussing the different body parts and muscles and were able to describe how it felt.

Friday

During role play the blocks were used to create a house which developed into dramatic play. Exploring sensory outdoors using different textures of material whilst incorporating songs. Outdoor water play filling and emptying buckets. working together and sharing ideas to support one another to make an easy transfer.

 

Week beginning 24th February 2025

Monday

Using the blocks a large group of children worked together whilst developing their communication skills by sharing and listening to different ideas. This creation became a large complex structure whilst focusing on detail to create different heights and displays. Other children then joined along the way which was then used for imaginative role play.

Tuesday

A couple of children created a stage which they then performed songs dramatically using their body movement and voice to perform taking turns.   A couple of children created snow balls with playdough developing their mathematical language to discuss sharing out the quantity. At beach kindergarten, children were able to identify the change in the tide and discuss the force of the waves as it crashed at the shore.

Wednesday

A group of children role played shops creating a ‘music shop’  were each selected their own musical instruments. As a group they created their own rhythmic sounds using drums and shakers . Some have been discussing the learning wall topic of ‘pets’ and sharing how they care for their pets. One child shared their understanding of a pets affection.

Thursday

We had visit from a child’s puppy which lead to more questions for our learning wall, discussing the health and wellbeing.  At gym we all participated in a yoga session using our listening skills and gross motor skills to stretch  and move our bodies to warm up before using the apparatus.

Friday

We had a visit from a child’s pet chicken which sparked questions that the children had as well as gaining new information on chickens. Everyone had the opportunity to stroke the pet if they chose to . This helped to develop confidence as well as using descriptive language to describe a new experience for everyone as they got to stroke a chicken.  A few of the children created a castle using the building blocks which then developed into creative play to use their structure.  Some children and their parents joined our Bookbug session this morning listening to a new story Hen in the Bed.

Week beginning 23rd February 2025

Monday
Following on from the child’s interest discussing pets- a display has been made which has sparked more conversations sharing  details of their pets and their names.

Outdoors some of the children were role playing families. Carry out role of daily life , through communication skills homelife was shared and were able to negotiate to  delegate tasks such as washing up and setting the table.

A couple of children were role playing being in space which then lead to a discussion on gravity.

Tuesday

Some children have been mark making at the writing table. Selecting different materials to “send a letter”. This lead to a discussion of why there is writing on the front on envelope and what writing there should be.

Some children have been sharing photos of their pets which they then created into a photo album  to share with their peers.  Developing mark making skills as they share their pets names.

   

Wednesday

In the art area some children have been creative exploring materials to create masks and car. Using cello tape.

At gym we have been all been developing our confidence whilst using large apparatus to challenge ourselves.

Thursday

One child has shown an interest in the alphabet sounding out the letters and listening to the alphabet song. Exploring the letters written whilst recognising some letters and sounding them.

A chart has been created to allow children to collect data and discuss what would be their ideal pet.

Friday

Some of us have been creating talking devices in the art area which was then used to role play with each other developing our creative skills as well as fine motor to thread, cellotape and cut. Some have been  using data handling by discovering on the graph discussing more or less points than the previous game.

Week Beginning 16th December 2024

Monday

Today some of the children explored the different tools which were in the book. This introduced using the drill. Through discussion of how to keep ourselves safe the children wore safety goggles, patiently waited turns and gave space to those using the drill.  Discussion of direction and discovering how the drill works the children were able to understand the function.

Tuesday

Whilst exploring letters a child showed interest in signalong alphabet by observing the formation of letters with hands. This lead to some nursery rhymes being sung in signalong ‘three little speckled frogs appeared to be the favourite.’ Using the post box at the writing table this encouraged children to mark make using pincer grips, some were able to write recognisable letters familiar to them whilst others were able to independently write their name.

 

Wednesday

Today there was lots of creativity, by some of our children, using the magnetic shapes. Lots of designing, problem solving, shape recognition and sharing of ideas. The majority of our children enjoyed a visit from Jamie The Jester who provided lots of laughter and the children enjoyed assisting him with some of his tricks before giving each child a balloon model.

Thursday

Today in gym the majority of our children had fun practicing a variety of party games developing our listening skills and ability to follow instructions. Our writing table was busy today with several of  our children writing letters to Santa developing our mark making, writing and letter recognition skills.

Friday

Today the majority of our children participated in our Christmas party engaging in a variety of party games, enjoying some party foods before performing a selection of Christmas songs for parents/family members. The party ended with a visit from Santa for whom the children sang Jingle Bells before Santa handed out gifts to all the children.

Week Beginning 11th November 2024

Monday

The children got off  to a busy start in the block area creating an elaborate car garage which later became an airport, there was lots of teamwork & negotiating going as they figured out how best to build the construction.  All the children took part in watching a short clip about Remembrance Day & why we were poppy’s, some of the children visited the war memorial to pay our respect & placed a cross in the garden.

 

Tuesday

The garden has been a popular choice today with lots of role play in the garden.  They used pipes & other resources for their play at fire fighters, some children were being rescued from the building. The play continued to the hospital role playing doctors, nurses and even a chef who prepared meals for the patients.

Wednesday

This week is national anti bullying week, we had a group discussion about being kind & have introduced our kindness tree back in nursery. This is where we place a leaf on the tree to celebrate & recognise when one of our children has  been kind. The art area has been busy with some beautiful art work being produced.

Thursday

Today we went to gym where all the children took part in Kodaly, learning about rhythmic patterns this is a fun way to develop rhythm skills as well as many other benefits. Back in nursery the hoola hoops were popular with the children giving each other challenges.  Some children were interested to watch videos on the iPad of themselves revisiting what they’ve been doing in nursery.

 

Week beginning 4th November 2024

Monday

A couple of children had created a “babies bed” Using different stages of block play. Carrying and complex stacking to create their design transporting items from the home corner to decorate. Lots of sharing of ideas and working cooperatively.

Tuesday

Some of us have been exploring technology and how it works using torches. Some were able to identify the battery life left on their torch by recognising the symbol. Using the torches 🔦 “It’s dark in here!” “Look it’s shining up there!” “Let’s shine it down there!” “We can jump on the light!” Discovering how technology works through play,

Wednesday

Today during our visit to the beach we explored the rock pools finding some different sized sea snails, sea weed, shells and pebbles creating lots of discussion using a wide and varied range of vocabulary. This afternoon a few families joined us for our weekly PEEP session which this week was about ‘Numbers, Numbers Everywhere’ where we designed, and created our own number books using a variety of materials,  sang number related songs/rhymes before enjoying a number themed story.

Thursday

During gym today all children participated well exploring a variety of different apparatus developing gross motor, turn taking and sharing skills. Some children were pretending to be teachers assigning ‘work’ to their pupils and reading stories – developing knowledge of the world of work whilst sharing/ representing their ideas through role/imaginative play.

Friday

Today some children were building dams in the sand -experimenting and discussing how to stop the water from going over/through the dam – developing problem solving skills. The musical instruments were popular with the majority of children. We discussed the names of the instruments and listened to the different sounds each instrument made. We discussed how we could play the instruments loudly, quietly, fast, slow- developing our use of mathematical language.

21st October 2024

Monday

Most of us have enjoyed role playing games in the garden this morning. Inside some of us have been making birthday cakes at the playdough table selecting different materials for decorating and singing Happy Birthday.

 

Tuesday

Some of us have been at the art table designing and creating  dolls and outfits for them using  junk modelling. Whilst creating  we were then able to  name parts of the body.

Wednesday

Following on from an interest last week, most of us made bird feeders. Developing our fine motor skills with threading, spreading and using the hole punch. We have been discussing how we can stick the seeds on and what we might be able to use, considering the safety for the birds. 🐦 Taking ownerships selecting sticks from the garden and colour of thread. “The birds will love my pink one” “gold is my favourite colour”, “sonic feeder”. Sharing space with our peers and taking turns waiting patiently for equipment.  

Thursday

In the home corner today some have been role playing families. Showing how to care for babies, to gently rock to sleep and care for them by dressing them.  We all had a discussion on our nursery charter talking about our responsibilities. One child shared their interest in bridges. This was then researched looking at old photographs and newspaper clippings online discussing the railway bridge disaster. The child then created their own bridge problem solving the construction “It’s not safe, it’s too wobbly.” Identifying different lengths “It’s too small.”

 

 

Friday

Today majority of the children have been role playing super hero’s creatively using different forms of technology to communicate one another e.g. role playing talking to their wrists. Using their  bodies and facial expressions to create a dramatic emphasis on their character .  At the playdough table, one child was able to make playdough independently.  The playdough was then shared and used our creative skills using autumnal natural resources.
