
ESOL courses are designed for learners whose first language is not English. Currently, it is used for someone who is learning English as a new resident in an English-speaking country. Learners develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the English language as well as their knowledge of language.
These ESOL qualifications correspond with levels A1 to C1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Outcomes and Standards in ESOL:
To understand written English, identify main point, purpose, skim ,scan, recognise opinions, extract key information.
To produce written English, good punctuation, grammar, spelling, layout, formal, informal emails, letters, blogs and online reviews.
To understand spoken language, identifying main points, context, purpose of monologue, interaction.
To communicate orally, appropriate structures, vocabulary, conveying meaning, initiate and sustain interaction.
The variations between the different ESOL Levels are quite clear.
ESOL National 2 involves basic language while National 3 concerns simple language.
ESOL National 4 covers straightforward language and ESOL National 5 focuses on complex language.
ESOL Higher involves much more complex and detailed language.
