Information for Schools

You can access our team by email: SupportingLearners@fife.gov.uk or submit a Request for Assistance (RfA) which you will find here under Supporting Learners’ Service heading: https://girfec.fife.scot/girfec/resources-and-publications

A Request for Assistance will be allocated to the team through the Supporting Learners’ Service Process. This will result in a team member initiating an Episode of Support to begin the process below.

Initial Conversation
A team member will engage in a conversation with the staff member requesting assistance and establish direction for support.
The teacher, PSA, pupil, parent/carer and/or other professionals identify that engagement with a member of EALSS may support a pupil’s learning, or that the school would benefit from a specific area of development.

This initial conversation will result in one of the following:

Signposting
The team member will direct the staff member to possible resources, information and or support available.

Outcome: The Episode of Support will be closed with a Summary of Outcome recorded on the Supporting Learners’ Database.

Consultation

The team member will engage in a discussion to problem solve which may take the form of communication through email/call.  On occasion, an observation may be requested, and a visit arranged to establish next steps for the school.

Engagement

  • The team member will arrange a meeting to elicit a clear understanding of pupil / school need.
  • The team member will meet with both the referrer and pupil then assess need based on the Request for Assistance.
  • A Shared Working Framework will be created to establish resources required, roles, responsibilities and a time frame.  A member of the school Senior Leadership Team is expected to be part of this discussion.
  • The Shared Working Framework will be reviewed within 6-8 weeks but if the needs of the pupil change then this may be reviewed sooner. This will be the responsibility of the school.

Outcome:  All involved parties will be aware of roles, responsibilities and a time frame for support. The evidence of this input e.g. case notes and the Shared Working Framework will be recorded and saved within the Supporting Learners’ Database. The Shared Working Framework will be updated at the review meeting to include next steps, decisions and further involvement if appropriate. At the review meeting if the Shared Working Framework targets are successful the case will close with the outcome clearly stated. If it is deemed that more support is required due to changing need or alternative factors, then a new Framework will be formed.
