In primary 1/2/3 we are always working hard in all areas of the curriculum. Our classroom is centred upon active learning where we enjoy making our own choices and enhancing our confidence as we tackle new activities each week.
We understand the significance of literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing within our lives, and we enjoy the emphasis placed on these subjects within school.
Literacy
Within literacy we have been progressing through our new phonics programme Rocket Phonics! We have enjoyed learning two new sounds a week. We experience activities each week which allow us to use our new sounds in practice. This approach allows us to have a secure understanding of each of the sounds in order to enhance our reading skills. We enjoy reading our class novel every day and adding new words to our vocabulary. We are experiencing lots of different types of stories and authors with our class library which allows us to choose books which suit each of our personal interests.
Numeracy
We enjoy experiencing conceptual numeracy within our class. We focus on two concepts a week to ensure a coherent approach to our learning and enjoy enhancing our knowledge through participating in active numeracy stations. Examples of these can be seen on our Twitter page! Assessment is holistically integrated within our learning to inform our next steps within all aspects of the curriculum. This allows us to celebrate achievements and monitor attainment.
Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL)
We use the Curriculum for Excellence to structure rich IDL experiences across different learning themes. So far this year we have been enjoying learning experiences relating to the topic ‘People Who Help Us’. We have actively contributed to the content of our learning experience by participating in regular class meeting to discuss what we know, any myths we know and anything that we want to know or experience. For example, we expressed interest in hospitals and learning about the bones in our body. We transformed our home corner into a hospital complete with an x-ray machine to enhance and apply our learning through play. Our outdoor learning is an aspect of our class which is IDL centred that we all look forward to each week. We encounter different experiences each week such as exploring the forest, building dens, discovering nature within our local community, and even using our surroundings to make delicious food! Additionally, we are incorporating digital learning and literacy into various of aspects of the curriculum. We use computers, tablets, and smart boards to enhance learning experiences. We enjoy using a variety of relevant apps and websites which allow us to progress within our learning whilst being interactive and fun.
Health and Well-being
In primary 1/2/3/4 we are facilitating self-regulation within our class. We have been working hard on improving our ability to recognise, identify and understand our feelings in order to manage them. We focus on active listening, identifying emotions and how they are represented and have a high emphasis on relationships to enhance wellbeing. We understand the significance of our relationships and interactions with others and use these to ensure that our class is a nurturing place to learn.
