Literacy at Carnegie Primary School<\/strong><\/p>\n At Carnegie, we use the Workshop for Literacy approach to teach Reading, Writing and Listening and Talking. This approach aims to teach all aspects of Literacy in a meaningful context for the children, through the use of a class text or novel. This approach begins in the early years, with teachers focusing on a class text each week. In the middle and upper years, class novels and texts may be used for several weeks (P3-7). Literacy tasks will be centred around this text exploring themes, vocabulary, punctuation and writers craft.<\/p>\n From Primary 2\/3 onwards, Carnegie Primary School has carefully selected, high-quality texts for each year group. All learners will have access to a copy of the class novel\/text and will be encouraged to read alongside their Class Teacher; at times they may be given the opportunity to read parts of the text aloud in class. This aims to develop reading ability, skills and confidence. Core Literacy learning such as grammar, punctuation and comprehension is then taught using the class novel as a meaningful stimulus.<\/p>\n At Carnegie, we use the Book Bug reading scheme in the early years to develop children\u2019s early reading skills. Books may be allocated on your child\u2019s online Active Learn account or a paper copy might be given home. As reading develops, our learners progress to using our Accelerated Reader scheme. Accelerated reader allows for personalisation and choice, where children are able to select their own reading material from a wide choice within our specifically dedicated section of the library as well as the main library. The levels are given following an assessment which ensures children are reading with appropriate challenge and pace. Children from P4 to P7 are encouraged to read independently for 20-30 minutes every day in the classroom. When they have finished reading their selected text, they will complete a short quiz on the book they have read. Children at all stages are encouraged to take their reading books home to read with their families (online or paper copy).<\/p>\n At Carnegie, we have a fantastic library which is run by our parent volunteer, the Library Troll! We have timetabled slots where classes can visit the library and learn the procedures and rules of a library environment.
