Outdoor Learning
Realising the Ambition states that high-quality outdoor play experiences have a direct and positive impact on children’s physical, cognitive, mental, and emotional development. Notably, there is a direct link between a child’s movement and the development of co-ordination, motor, and concentration skills. Furthermore, Outdoor play can impact positively on wellbeing through the lessening of stress, anxiety, and the reduction of cortisol levels in the brain.
Given that outdoor, physical play opportunities that provide challenge and stimulation are crucial for positive future health outcomes, it is vital that at Carnegie Nursery we both value and facilitate opportunities for children to access high-quality outdoor play experiences.
All our children have daily access to our outdoor area and this is available on a free flow basis. Children are encouraged to get ready independently and make those choices. We also have access to the Hub and School gym hall for specific activities and children are invited to take part if they wish.
Forest/Beach Kindergarten
Over the year we participate in both Forest and Beach Kindergarten.
The forest/beach setting provides many valuable learning opportunities for the children. They can experience exploring the wider natural environment, looking in detail at living things, the changing seasons, trails, water and trees.
The type of play in the forest or beach can differ from the play in the nursery rooms but is equally as valuable as some children relish learning and exploring outdoors.
Staff have observed children growing in confidence through visits to the forest as they begin to accomplish essential life skills such as problem solving, teamwork, risk taking, being creative and active and communicating with others.
Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing (especially wellies!) on Forest/Beach Kindergarten days.
We are extremely grateful to parents/carers who volunteer to help us with these trips. Without your help we would not be able to offer these wonderful learning experiences.
