The children have been learning about verbs and bossy verbs and have explored how these can be used effectively when writing instructions. As part of our Ancient Egypt topic, the children created their own instructional writing on how to mummify a mummy, carefully using bossy verbs to make their instructions clear and easy to follow. We have also focused on punctuation, particularly the use of commas in lists and sentences. In addition, we explored the key features of fact files, including headings, subheadings, facts, and illustrations. The children used these features to organise information clearly and created fact-files on famous Egyptian Pharo Tutankhamun.

Numeracy

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we have spent time developing our understanding of time. The children have learned about the days of the week, months of the year, and the four seasons, discussing how these are linked and how they help us organise our daily lives. We have explored timetables and considered why they are useful in different situations. The children have also worked hard on telling the time using analogue clocks, confidently recognising o’clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to times. Alongside this, we have been developing our understanding of direction and position through activities involving directional language and grid references. The children have enjoyed applying these skills through practical tasks and games. We are now beginning our new topic on money, where the children will develop their understanding of coins, notes, and using money in real-life situations.

Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about food journeys and exploring where our food comes from. The children investigated the journey food takes from farm to fork and learned about the different people, processes, and transport involved in getting food from producers to consumers. This has helped them to develop a greater appreciation of the work involved in producing the food we eat and the importance of making healthy and informed choices.

Other Curricular Areas

Our topic this term has been Ancient Egypt, this has captured the children’s imagination. We have explored many aspects of Egyptian life and culture, including the construction and purpose of the pyramids, the process of mummification, the role of pharaohs, and the significance of the Valley of the Kings. The children were particularly interested in learning about King Tutankhamun and the discovery of his tomb. We also explored the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians and learned about a variety of Egyptian gods and goddesses. Through discussions, research, art activities, and written tasks the children have developed a broad understanding of the Ancient Egyptians and their lives.

As part of our wider learning, we have also explored the life and achievements of David Attenborough. The children learned about his work as a natural historian and broadcaster and discussed the important messages he shares about protecting wildlife and caring for our planet. This linked closely to our ongoing discussions about the environment and how we can make positive changes in our own community.

The children have also been involved in developing ideas for improving our outdoor garden area. They have considered ways to make the space more attractive for wildlife and more enjoyable for everyone to use. Through these activities, they have developed their understanding of sustainability, teamwork and caring for the environment. We planted our own vegetables and once grown used these to create fillings for sandwiches as well as smoothies.

One of the highlights of the term has been looking after our caterpillars. The children have thoroughly enjoyed observing the changes that take place during the life cycle of a butterfly. They have shown great care and responsibility while looking after them and have been excited to watch them grow and prepare for their transformation. We are all looking forward to seeing them emerge as butterflies.

Overall, the children have worked extremely hard this term and should be very proud of their achievements. They have shown enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge themselves across all areas of learning and it has been wonderful to see their confidence and skills continue to develop.

This term has been a busy and exciting one with the children engaging enthusiastically in a wide range of learning experiences across the curriculum.
