they need"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many of our girls will not ask for help and are o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ften trying really hard not to draw attention to themselves.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Girls do this by masking, which means <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they can often appear to be coping.\u00a0 As a result we don\u2019t always appreciate quite how much work and effort it takes to be able to cope in school.<span style=\"color: #ff6600\"> <a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fi\/autisticgirls\/what-is-masking\/\">Read more about masking<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We therefore need to be proactive, and ensure we are aware of what their needs are.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>Visuals<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Visual supports are communication tools that can be used with autistic people.\u00a0 They can be used in most situations, are adaptable and portable.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autism.org.uk\/advice-and-guidance\/topics\/communication\/communication-tools\/visual-supports\">Visual supports (autism.org.uk)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Visual supports can help to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provide structure and routine\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">encourage independence, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">build confidence, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">improve understanding, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">avoid frustration and anxiety, and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provide opportunities to interact with others.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">They can make communication physical and consistent, rather than fleeting and inconsistent like spoken words can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>Executive Functioning<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Many of our girls have executive functioning differences <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">which are often linked to autism and ADHD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Some of the things Executive Functioning is responsible for are:-<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Starting tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Regulating emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Flexible thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Working memory<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Planning and\u00a0prioritising.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For our learners with executive functioning difficulties,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they have to think\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">very hard\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">about everything such as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">any task or any aspect of their day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">his can be
