A lack of research means we do not know how many autistic people self-harm. A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">utistic people are more likely to self-harm than non-autistic people, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">autistic girls\/women are more likely to self-harm than autistic men.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>S<\/b><b>elf-harm v\/s self-injurious behaviour<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some autistic people may hurt themselves in various ways, such as banging their head on surfaces, biting their hands or arms or pulling their hair. This is known as\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">self-injurious behaviour<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Harm is not the intent.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0It is the result of an attempt to regulate or express immediate physical pain or discomfort, or communicate a particular need.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Self-harm\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is intentionally causing physical pain or harm to yourself, often as an attempt to manage difficult emotions or distress. It doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that someone wants to end their life, and can also be called non-suicidal self-harm (NSSI).\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" style=\"color: #ff6600\">Possible functions of self-harm<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dealing with intense feelings or distress\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Trying to feel in control\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Self-punishment\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wanting to feel something when emotionally numb.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sensory differences \u2013 trying to regulate\/manage sensitivity to sound, light, texture and touch or attempt to seek proprioceptive sensory feedback through deep pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Possible signs of self-harm<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keeping fully covered around others, i.e. w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">earing long sleeves at inappropriate times\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spending more frequent or longer periods of time in the bathroom<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unexplained injuries, usually on the wrists, arms, thighs and chest\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unexplained blood stains on clothing or tissues\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Signs of low self-esteem,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">expressing feelings of failure, uselessness, or hopelessness\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spending more time on their own, becoming more private or defensive\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Avoiding activities where they have to change clothing, such as swimming\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Signs of depression &#8211; low mood, tearfulness or a lack of motivation or interest in activities they used to enjoy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b>Top Tips<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be curious and adjust possible triggers that may be causing an autistic person to self-harm, i.e. unnecessary social\/academic pressure, overwhelming<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sensory stimulation or sudden transitions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If they are self-harming because they seek the sensation it gives them, try to find a safer age-appropriate alternative that offers them proprioceptive feedback (deep pressure) throughout their school day (see sensory diet section).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Responding to a disclosure of self-harm<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Clarify the limits of confidentiality as early as possible in the conversation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Acknowledge their distress and show concern<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Talk at their pace and give them time to talk<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Try to understand the sequence of events that led them to self-harm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Present yourself as confident and in control (however you may feel inside)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"6\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be realistic about what you can and can\u2019t do but don\u2019t avoid talking about self-harm<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be interested in them as a person and not just as someone who self-harms\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"8\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Talk to them about the key adults in their lives and develop a sense of who supports them<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"9\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ask the young person what they want to do and plan the next steps together<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"10\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be strength focussed\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"11\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Try to end by offering HOPE and a problem solving approach<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"12\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Agree what the follow up plans will be<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\" data-contrast=\"auto\">Remember to<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be aware of the limitations within your professional role\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Follow your service\/organisational policy or protocol\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Use the support available to you &#8211; e.g. manager, colleagues, supervisor\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Contact other agencies for advice or to refer on where appropriate\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"5\"
