Many report that existing sensory difficulties are worse at this time, rendering them even more hypersensitive to noise, taste and smell, which can create more barriers to managing day to day life. Body changes like tenderness and cramps can make a young person feel uncomfortable and reluctant to do things they would normally enjoy. The sight, sensation and smell of blood can be scary and the worry of leaks and smells may prove distressing. Making sure they have suitable period products with them and knowing how to use them correctly can all prove overwhelming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Normalise\u00a0talking openly\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">about periods, using positive language. Remind young people that periods are normal and healthy<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Signpost young people to detailed and accurate\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">information about what to expect<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. This can help them become more independent and confident about their bodies and how to manage any worries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Keep period products readily available and\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">easy to access\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">so that they can help themselves as needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Check in with them regularly and give them\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">opportunities to ask questions<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Resources<\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<p>Education Scotland RSHP resource has information on menstruation for all learners including those who need differentiated approaches. <span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><a style=\"color: #ff6600\" href=\"https:\/\/rshp.scot\/\">Home &#8211; RSHP<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fife Council Educational Psychology Service Guidance on Relationships and Sexual Health Education for children and young people with autism.
