What difference would £5,000 make to your school?

We’ve already had a great response to The School We’d Like competition, which we are running with Zurich Municipal. The competition offers three lucky schools the chance to win £5,000.

There’s still time for your school to enter – all we’re asking you to do is to tell us how you would spend it making your school an even better place to learn. Each winning school should use the prize money to help make their winning idea a reality.

This is an opportunity for the whole school – teachers, students and school councils – to put their heads together. Maybe purchasing new equipment for your school band would revolutionise your music department? Or perhaps you want to develop your anti-bullying programme? Or plan an educational trip? The judges are looking for some really inspiring and creative ideas that will make a difference to your school.

To get you started, we’ve created a series of teaching resources that will inspire your students to come up with an exciting idea on how they can improve their school. In addition we have a great poster for you to download from our website to spread the word about this exclusive competition within your school.

European animal life – competition for primary schools

The new European Parliament office in Scotland competition for primary pupils asks them to create images to illustrate a 2013 Calendar on the theme of ‘Europe’s rich Animal Kingdom’. The competition is now open for entries to be submitted until the deadline of 9th October.

The organisers are especially keen to see artwork of some of the rarer European animals, birds and insects. The diversity of species which live in Europe provides plenty of scope for creative young people.

The artwork will be judged by a panel of MEPs and European Parliament officials, with prizes and a presentation to the winner. The winner of the competition will feature in a calendar made up of children’s drawings from all over Europe, and will also illustrate one month, along with eleven runners up, in the official EP Office in Scotland 2013 calendar. All schools entering the competition will receive a copy of the finished calendar, and a selection of the illustrations will also be exhibited at the EP Office in Edinburgh.

Good luck to all the Scottish children who take part.

Learners in primary and secondary schools are invited to design a picture that relates to one of the main themes, which have been categorised into topics.

Fantastic Fife!

Two Fife children have came first place in their categories in a National writing competition!

A pupil from Kings Road PS in Rosyth came first in the lower primary category and a pupil from Kirkcaldy West PS came first in the upper primary category…a fantastic result for Fife!  In the secondary school category a Fife pupil from Auchmuty HS, Glenrothes was a runner up.

There were over 450 schools taking part from all across  Scotland in the Glovember writing competition and with Fife children winning two out of the three categories, we at Fife’s CLN feel they should be exceptionally proud of their achievement.

Well done Ben and Niamh!

Chris Evans said: “We were overwhelmed last year to be inundated with thousands of truly creative and fantastic entries from nearly 30,000 kids, and in 2012 we need your help to make the competition even bigger than before. To read is good, but to write is even better and dare I say it, can even be more fun.”
