A Visit to Whitelee Windfarm near East Kilbride

On November 3rd 2011 P6M visited Whitelee Windfarm. The weather was good to us and we enjoyed a great day. This windfarm is the largest on-shore windfarm in Europe. At the moment there are 140 turbines with 75 more planned for the near future. Each turbine can produce enough electricity to service 1 300 homes.

In the morning we explored just a small area, making our way along the tracks until we got to the reservoirs. The wind turbines were gigantic and although you could hear a whooshing noise as the blades turned they weren’t noisy. Whilst standing underneath the turbine you could easily carry on a conversation without having to raise your voice. We were enjoying ourselves so much that we had to get back to the visitor centre quickly to get our lunch before the second part of the visit began.

In the afternoon we split into two groups. One group went on the tour and into the exhibition inside the visitor centre whilst the other group went into the workshop to conduct an experiment to find out how many blades and what shape blades would give the best output.

Book Character Day

Great fun was had by all on Book Character Day. The whole school went to the hall for the parade first thing in the morning. Winners were chosen from each class. (That must have been an extremely difficult task!)

Here are some photos of our class.  The costumes are fantastic. Well done to all who participated.

17th and 18th November – The Four Nations Maths Challenge

The Four Nations Maths Challenge has come and gone!  Schools and students from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have competed to become the national champions! Congratulations to all who participated.

The Four Nations Maths Challenge Hall of Fame is closed for verification. Coming soon ……… Final Placings for the Hall of Fame. Stay tuned for the final results announcement.

To reward everyone’s fantastic participation and effort in the challenge, each gold coin collected will have earned you 10 credits at the end of the challenge!

Day 1 of the challenge saw a maximum of 30 coins to collect; 3 coins to collect for each topic. On Day 1 pupils from the four nations answered over 5 million questions and over 41/2 million questions were correct.

Day 2 saw 150 coins to collect, 10 coins on levels 1 to 5, and double coins (20 coins) on levels 6 to 10 of Live Mathletics. On Day 2 nearly 11 million questions were answered with 92% accuracy! Fantastic!

With almost 2 whole days there was everything to play for!

Pupils from P6M have worked very enthusiastically throughout both days of the challenge, both at school and at home. The computer suite was even buzzing at lunchtime when many pupils gave up part of their break to score points. We have made it onto the Scottish leader board several times throughout the two days.

Look at how many points we scored on Thursday!

P6M Mini Basketball Tournament

Today was the last session of basketball for P6M and we held a mini house tournament. We tried to use all the throwing, catching and dodging skills we have been practising during our lessons.

The competition was fierce and the pace fast. Everyone played hard and there were displays of excellent passing, catching, intercepting and dodging. Well done to all scorers but especially Jack, Sandra, Jamie and Calum who scored some great baskets.

The scores were as follows:-

Fleming v Baird  2:2,Livingstone v Watt 0:0, Baird v Watt 4:6, Livingstone v Fleming 0:6,  Livingstone v Baird 2:6, Fleming v Watt 4:2

Another day and we’re going up!

Solar Power

As part of our topic work we have been investigating solar power.  We have some small photovoltaic cells that converts light to electrical energy to power a small motor.  Before the October holiday we wired up the photovoltaic cells to the motor and got it working.  We had a go at wiring it up the opposite way and found that the motor whizzed around in the opposite direction.

Today we worked in our groups to make a working model using solar power.  We had some very grand ideas and found with the materials we were using our ideas didn’t always work and we had to make some adaptations – some minor and some major. In the end each group managed to make a model they could be proud of. All the models had a moving part powered by solar power and everyone was very pleased with their afternoon’s work.

Look at our photos. What do you think?
