Spanish Assembly at Nethermains

Spanish Assembly at Nethermains – June 2015

by Caroline Cane

Primary 4 from Nethermains Primary School have been working extremely hard all year learning Spanish and more recently, about the culture of Spain through an IDL topic.

As the children have progressed through primary 4, the language has become increasingly embedded and they have improved their understanding of their own culture and language values. Recently, they confidently presented their learning by way of a fully Spanish speaking assembly, using various songs and drama with the aid of two translators to assist with language barriers.

100_6349There is a clear understanding that modern language activities need to be engaging, motivating and purposeful, allowing the children to enjoy practicing new sounds and phrases and building their confidence in using the language. Songs, poems, rhymes and games provide a very strong linguistic basis for children’s learning and enjoyment of a modern language. Bilingual environmental print and pictures support activities within the classroom in addition to the use of puppets, characters and the interactive whiteboards. Activities are clearly related to the experiences and outcomes in literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing, and to the wider curriculum.

100_6351As a result, children have developed confidence in using another language and are very keen to learn more. There is a genuine atmosphere of excitement about learning languages in Nethermains, which is a result of the positive school ethos around languages and global citizenship, supported by an enthusiastic head teacher and staff. Nethermains is well placed to develop languages further.

  1. we wanted to recommend you a new and free web to learn languages abroad through the exchange students. Students or their families can register for free, fill out a profile and contact other worldwide students and agree exchanges with them that allow to learn languages in the origien country and among natives. is just launched and now almost all students are Spanish, so it would be very interesting for English speaking students. What do you think?

    Thank you very much
