Answer Technique for Explain Questions

How to develop a point- Turning one mark into two….

Point- Identify the correct topic to talk about

Explanation- Give a reason for doing this

Example- Give an example of how this will help you

Point: Explaining why I used certain approaches to develop physical factor

Explain: I used a repetition drill to develop me overhead clear in badminton as this allowed me to develop my technique and perform this shot more accurately…….

Example: Using this approach meant that in a game I was able to play this shot consistently during rallies and move my opponent to the back of the court.

Monitoring and Evaluating- Emotional Factor

3a) Describe how you monitored and evaluated your progress in relation to the development of the Emotional Factor (4)

Method 1: A training diary can be used to monitor the ongoing development of your performance. I completed the diary straight after my training session as it allowed me to record me thoguhts and feelings on how a performance had went and what training approaches worked well. I would also make a note of any other development needs I identified.

Method 2: Another method I used to monitor my progress was retesting using the ‘Self Reflective Emotional Analysis’. I undertook the 5 questions involved in this test and rated my ability to manage certain emotions during my performance. I was then able to compare this to my score at the start of the development programme

Answer Structure- Scenario Question (PART B)

3B-Scenario: Explain the development approaches that could be used to help this person prepare for a future performance

Intro: There are a number of development approaches that could be used to develop the physical and emotional factors in preparation for this performance.

Centreing :One approach that could be used to help me overcome fear is ‘centering’. I used this approach because this allows me to mentally prepare for my performance and be able to manage my fear in preparation for the performance. For example if I was afraid of making a bad pass that gave away a goal I would visualise performing successfully passes and this will help me block out any negative feeling and help my performance.

Parking It: I also used ‘Parking it’ to help me manage my anger because this approach helped me to stay focused on the game by forgetting about the situation that had made me angry and continuing with my own game. As a result of using this approach I was able to stay calm and try to get possession of the ball and score a basket to help my team win as I was not still thinking about what had made me angry.

Repetition Drills: To develop more accurate passing skills in preparation for the performance I used repetition drills because this will allow me to increase my consistency when performing this skill in a game. This will help me as being able to pass accurately will help my team create scoring opportunities.

Conditioned Games: Another development approach I used was conditioned games, making the condition that I could only use 2 touches this helped me to develop my passing and moving skills when under pressure. This helped me in a real game as I was used to the pressure of exciting this skills when being closed down by a defender.

Interval Training: I could also develop CRE through interval training as this will allow me to work at a high intensity for 20-30 min in my training zone and ensure I can maintain a high skill level for the full duration of the game. In this last minute I will be able to break up pitch and score on counter attack.

Team practices help me improve my knowledge of the tactics the team were using as I was able to get used to my role when the team is defending. This allowed me to track my opponent and prevent my team from conceding.

Impact of the emotional factor

This is not a typical exam style question however it is important that you know how this factor impacts on performance!

From the data you gathered analyse how the emotional factor impacts on performance in your activity? (6 marks)

Introduction:

  • Sub factor (Anger)
  • Your activity (eg. Badminton)

Postive impact

  • Eg 1- Control anger> means I focus on points
  • Eg 2- Anger used as motivation made me more determined.
  • Eg 3- Channelled my anger into my shots and this allowed me to hit them more powerfully as I was more ‘pumped up’/ filled with adrenaline

Negative

  • Eg 1- If I cannot manage my anger I may then make bad decisions for example I may try to hit my shot to hard out of frustration.
  • Eg 2- I may not be in the correct from of mind for the next point because I am so angry about a previous mistake I made. This will then impact on my concentration.
  • Eg 3- I may lose my temper and receive a warning or point deduction from the umpire as a result of my poor behaviour. (loose marks in my one off performance?!)

Gathering Data- Emotional Factor

  • Overcome anger and performer to best of ability by concentrating on role within team.
  • Allows you to forget about a bad decision and continue with the game and concentrate on making effective decisions.
  • Release tension caused by fear and this will allow me to execute my technique effectively.

Answer Structure- Scenario Question (PART A)

The extract is a summary of a footballer’s performance in a recent game

  • Pass completion rate was only 40%
  • Booked in 40 minutes, sent off in 71 minutes
  • Was at fault for the oppositions first goal, not tracking the opponent
  • Appear agitated and distracted by the crowd

In your answer you must refer to the following factors impacting on performance; Emotional and one other

– from physical and social

  1. Analyse some of the reasons for the footballer putting in this kind of performance.
Intro: One factor that may have impacted on the footballer’s performance is the emotional factor.

Anger had a negative impact on the player’s performance as the information above shows that the player was booked and, then thirty minutes later sent off. This happened because the player was angry with himself for giving away the first goal and as a result took his frustration out on an opponent with two bad tackles.

Fear also had a negative impact on the players’ performance as he was afraid of making a mistake when performing in front of a big crowd and this caused him to become anxious and distracted. This had a negative impact on his performance as the player forgot to carry out his defensive duties as resulted in his team giving away the first goal.

Fear also led to the player committing his first foul and getting his first yellow card as he did not want to be at fault for conceding another goal so he brought the attacker down as he attempted to go by him.

Fear could also have impacted on the player’s confidence and this caused him to make mistakes when executing simple skills such as passing, as his success rate was only 40%.

Physical factor also responsible for this players performance:

Skill– This player is a very inaccurate passer due to his poor technique and this caused him to give the ball away a lot.

Skill– The player is a poor tackler and often mistimes tackles causing him to get booked.

Tactics– The player also did not have a good understanding of the team’s defensive tactics and this caused him not to track back and as a result his team conceded the first goal.

Tactics- The player was also playing out of position and this caused him to feel agitated as he was playing in a role he was not familiar with.

Fitness: The player also had a low level of speed/CRE and was not able to track back when defending, this caused the first goal.

Scenario Question (Model Answer 8)

Below is a model answer that gained full marks in the prelim exam.

Question: Evaluate the advantages and/or disadvantages of the approaches used leading up to this event. You must make reference to your performance development. (8)

The approaches I used in the lead up were self-talk and visualisation. An advantage of self-talk was that it would motivate me for the game which is useful as it will make me play better as I will want to win more as I have told myself that I could beat anyone which motivated me to go on and win the game. Another advantage of self-talk is that it can build my confidence as I can give myself hope that I can win and this is useful as I would perform a larger variety of skills during the game which would make it harder for my opponent as he doesn’t know what I am going to do. However this could be a disadvantage as if I use self-talk multiple times I could make myself overconfident and this could affect my performance as I want to play as well as I think that I have already won the game which means I might make more mistakes as I wouldn’t be trying as hard. An advantage of visualisation is that it allows me to see what I want to do during the game and gives me and idea of what the game is going to be like which can motivate me as well as make my anxiety level good and this is useful as I would be more motivated to do well which means ill try harder and do everything I can as well as no having my anxiety too high or low so I wont get tired out at the start but still try my hardest during the game. A disadvantage is that I wasn’t able to concentrate fully on visualising what I wanted because it was hard to concentrate in my surroundings so it wasn’t as effective. Another disadvantage is that I could only do it before the game and I was focusing on my performance I wasn’t remembering what I had visualised so it made it less effective.
