Glenburn Wood Hut
At Glenburn ELC, outdoor learning is central to our ethos, and one of our proudest outdoor spaces is our Glenburn Wood Hut — a name chosen by the children themselves through discussions, ideas and shared decision‑making. The Wood Hut reflects their sense of ownership, adventure and curiosity.
Our Wood Hut is used exclusively for woodwork, providing a dedicated space where children can safely explore real tools, real materials and real problem‑solving opportunities. This focused environment allows children to engage deeply in meaningful, hands‑on experiences inspired by Froebelian values.
Through woodwork, children develop a wide range of important skills, including:
- Independent risk‑assessment skills
- Hand–eye coordination
- Early numeracy and measuring skills
- Creativity and design thinking
- Confidence, resilience and self‑esteem
Supported by trained staff, children use tools such as hammers, nails, saws and other age‑appropriate equipment to bring their ideas to life. Woodwork encourages children to plan, experiment, problem‑solve and feel immense pride in what they create.
This dedicated Wood Hut space allows woodwork to flourish as a core part of our outdoor learning — giving children the freedom to build, investigate and grow in a safe, purposeful and inspiring environment.
