Employee Review & Development (ERD) and Professional Update (PU)

For GTCS-registered colleagues:

Employee Review & Development (ERD) and Professional Update (PU) sign off processes are essential frameworks for supporting teachers’ professional growth and ensuring high standards in education in Scotland. Engagement in these processes are required to maintain full general GTCS registration in Scotland.

What are the requirements around Employee Review & Development (ERD) and Professional Update (PU) sign off?

On an ongoing basis:

  • engage in ongoing professional learning
  • engage in an annual staff review (ERD) process
  •  maintain a reflective record of Professional Learning and evidence of impact on thinking and actions
  • reflect and plan using the Standards

On an annual basis:

  • update registration details (on MyGTCS and CPD Manager and make sure they are correct, matching and up to date on both systems e.g. name, email address, establishment etc.)

On a 5-yearly basis:

  • sign off to confirm engagement in the ERD process every 5 years with GTC Scotland (both teacher and Reviewer)

Signposts to support/resources:

Reminder emails are sent out every year to remind colleagues about their ‘Now, Next and Later’ responsibilities in relation to ERD and PU.  Specific reminders are also sent to those due PU sign off in the current academic year.

For non GTCS-registered colleagues:

What is Employee Review & Development (ERD)?

This process is a common approach across Education to develop our workforce.  It provides an opportunity to review, reflect and recognise strengths and understanding, and areas for development.  It’s about colleagues developing to ensure we all feel confident and empowered to take the service forward.

Your ERD process will involve:

  • Creating an ERD Prompt on CPD Manager
  • An ERD meeting and conversation around the Prompt document, your reflections on recent pieces of learning, and any areas of development moving forward
  • Developing an ERD Plan on CPD Manager which reflects your ERD discussion

The following videos aim to support non-GTCS Registered staff members with the completion of ERD on CPD Manager system:
