{"id":3664,"date":"2023-01-11T14:56:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-11T14:56:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fa\/falkirkearlyyears\/?p=3664"},"modified":"2023-01-11T14:56:47","modified_gmt":"2023-01-11T14:56:47","slug":"what-matters-to-me-approach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fa\/falkirkearlyyears\/what-matters-to-me-approach\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;What Matters to Me&#8217; Approach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi my name is Elaine Haughton and I am an Early Years Pedagogue with a particular focus on children\u2019s rights and participation.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fa\/public\/falkirkearlyyears\/uploads\/sites\/1373\/2023\/01\/11144320\/EH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3665 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fa\/public\/falkirkearlyyears\/uploads\/sites\/1373\/2023\/01\/11144320\/EH.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year I have been given the opportunity to further develop and embed Falkirk ELC\u2019s \u2018What Matters to Me\u2019 approach.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a universal approach, I am providing all ELC settings across our authority with the opportunity for a support visit where we can engage in discussion around personal planning, what matters to children and families and how to embed children\u2019s rights into everyday experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Initially What Matters to Me was something that was only really considered during times of transition. For What Matters to Me to be valued as a rights-based approach it has to be a document that is shared between staff, children, and families throughout a child\u2019s time at nursery. It should <strong>capture <\/strong>and <strong>respond<\/strong> to children\u2019s perceptions, showing children and families that we have listened.<\/p>\n<p>Child participation is one of the core principles of the UN Convention of the rights of the child. It is important for teams to reflect on how they encourage and provide opportunities for children to participate in the everyday life of the setting. Are we embedding children\u2019s rights in our everyday practice in a holistic and meaningful way?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRights are not an add on, they are woven through every aspect of the ethos and provision of the service. How do we ensure we are not being tokenistic? Do we take the time for quality and meaningful conversations? It\u2019s about slowing down and listening with our eyes and ears, observing how children express their thoughts and ideas both verbal and non-verbal.<\/p>\n<p>For children that are non-verbal how do we enable them to participate? Alison Clark.<\/p>\n<p>Wherever you are on your journey to ensuring a rights-based approach to <strong><em>\u2018What Matters to Me\u2019<\/em><\/strong> it is important that you reflect back on the Image of the child.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>What thoughts do you hold, on children and childhood?<\/li>\n<li>How do you talk to, listen to, and observe children?<\/li>\n<li>Does your environment positively reflect the image of the child?
