{"id":5569,"date":"2018-08-01T13:30:49","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T13:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fa\/ICTFalkirkPrimaries\/?p=5569"},"modified":"2022-04-12T13:53:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T12:53:35","slug":"emojis-symbols-and-signs-in-literacy-and-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/fa\/digilearnfalk\/2018\/08\/01\/emojis-symbols-and-signs-in-literacy-and-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Using emojis, symbols and signs in learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"builder-section-text_11\" class=\"builder-section-first builder-section builder-section-text builder-section-next-text builder-text-columns-1 layout-4-8\" style=\"background-size: cover; background-repeat: no-repeat;background-position: center center;\">\n<div class=\"builder-section-content\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-row\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-column builder-text-column-1\" id=\"builder-section-text_11-column-1\">\n<div class=\"builder-text-content\">\n<p>For conveying information quickly we all rely on signs and symbols every day, whether it&#8217;s finding toilets, exits, stairs or lifts\u00a0in unfamiliar public buildings, or signs on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warning_sign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">roads warning of dangers<\/a> ahead. <!--more-->We&#8217;re used to seeing symbols which convey information such as laundry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/reviews\/washing-machines\/article\/washing-symbols-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">washing symbols<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lawprintpack.co.uk\/news\/the-ultimate-guide-to-packaging-symbols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">packaging symbols<\/a>,\u00a0or about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recyclenow.com\/recycling-knowledge\/packaging-symbols-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recycling products.<\/a> And\u00a0it might be said that people find information shared in an infographic poster more visually engaging when text and graphics and combined.\u00a0Images can be recognised quickly regardless of the first language of the reader ensuring that information can be conveyed concisely without high levels of reading skills in any particular language.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Signs and symbols have been used throughout history to convey information so they are not new. The symbols used in ancient civilisations through to the emoticons and emojis of today may be considered to be part of a continuum.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/32793732\/uks-fastest-growing-language-is-emoji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">described as one of the fastest growing languages<\/a> and many millions of messages are reported to be sent every day using only emoji. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andy_murray\/status\/586811114744320000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennis star Andy Murray tweeted about his wedding day solely using emoji<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><br \/>So what is an Emoji?<\/h2>\n<p>Emojis are simply pictures you type on a device, whether it&#8217;s a smartphone, tablet or computer.
