Your child\u2019s\u00a0teacher\u00a0may set up a<\/span>\u00a0virtual learning environment<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>VLE)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for their class. This can have many different names<\/span>\u00a0such as\u00a0<\/span>\u201conline learning environment\u201d or \u201cvirtual classroom\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>but the purpose is always the same.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For\u00a0<\/span>pupils and families this means an ability to\u00a0<\/span>see<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>class announcements and\u00a0<\/span>access\u00a0<\/span>teaching materials \u2013 tutorial videos, handouts, files, documents, presentations, web links \u2013 from anywhere<\/span>\u00a0with an internet connection.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0P<\/span>upils\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0then use these materials to complete\u00a0<\/span>activities and assessments set by the teacher<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As well as accessing materials provided by a teacher, pupils can also access their own work. <\/span>This could allow a student to finish off an activity or review s<\/span>omething\u00a0<\/span>they have been working on <\/span>to strengthen <\/span>understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the biggest advantages comes when receiving feedback.\u00a0<\/span>Teachers can respond to a piece of work using a score or grade, written comments, annotations or even audio\/video clips.<\/span>\u00a0Allowing families and pupils to access feedback in a virtual learning environment help<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0everyone to be informed about\u00a0<\/span>a student\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>progress<\/span>, strengths and areas for development.\u00a0<\/span>Finally, t<\/span>he ability to safely communicate with other pupils and teachers using a chat or posts area<\/span>\u00a0can also be very useful<\/span> in supporting learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depending on how a virtual learning environment is set up, you may be given your own log-in and password for anytime access. Each pupil will have their own log-in details and their account is password protected <\/span>t<\/span>o ensure their work is secure and private.<\/span> While teachers can see work completed by every pupil in the class, pupils can only see their own work – unless a task has been deliberately set as a collaboration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many different virtual learning environments <\/span>which can be used by your child\u2019s teachers.<\/span>\u00a0Popular options include<\/span>: Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, <\/span>Apple Classroom and <\/span>Apple Schoolwork. <\/span>While these all do many of the same\u00a0<\/span>things,<\/span> they each have their own style and appearance. Some teachers may even customize the virtual learning environment to look like their real\u00a0<\/span>classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n
