In order to increase enjoyment of writing, children are allowed to choose their own topics. There are many ways to generate ideas for writing: play, teacher-led discussion, talking with a talk partner or free writing are a few.
Pupils were given a choice of genre and planning formats. Planning for writing is a vital part of the writing process as plans make visible and organise ideas. Plans are a working document and can always be changed.
We use BonnyBooks when sharing the work we are doing to develop our school culture of reading for pleasure. On this page, you will find examples of activities we undertake throughout the year to encourage our pupils to read, read, read!
Writing Week will be back for its 2nd year from 9th – 13th May. This is an opportunity for pupils to write about topics that interest them and helps to build their motivation to write for pleasure. We have had our old stock for a few years and now is the time to refresh our reading material. We had wonderful support from Falkirk Library Services librarians to decide which books to keep in school and which ones to send to ‘book heaven’!
The whole school took part in a World Book Day activity to create a ‘Role on the Wall’. This is a character from fiction which the children have been reading about. The work includes the thoughts, feelings, appearance and attributes of the character and is a great way to start thinking about characterisation.
On World Book Day 2022, our library leaders read to our infant classes. The library leaders loved the experience and the younger pupils were so excited to be read to.
We were thrilled to receive a substantial grant from the Scottish Library Improvement Fund to renovate our school library.
