\uf005<\/span> \uf005<\/span> \uf005<\/span> \uf005<\/span><\/p>\n Suitable for:<\/strong> older 1st<\/sup> level and\/or 2nd<\/sup> level<\/p>\n Themes<\/strong> \u2013 identity, racism, bullying, mixed-race families, 1950s, fostering of \u2018brown babies\u2019, post-war life and dealing with the loss of family members, rural life, mining and the use of animals in the pits<\/p>\n The many themes in the book \u2018Birdie\u2019 makes it a book that can be read in conjunction with learning about the themes listed above or just as a beautifully written story that made me think of \u2018The Secret Garden\u2019, \u2018Black Beauty\u2019 and \u2018Anne of Green Gables\u2019 as I read.<\/p>\n Set in the 1950s, BIRDIE follows the story of a ten-year-old Birdie Bagshaw (great name) living in a \u2018brown babies\u2019 children\u2019s home in Leeds – until her great-aunt and uncle invite her to come and live with them in their little village in Yorkshire.
