These educators discovered that learning became more engaging and impactful for students when it was framed around a story. They used stories to combine learning in the newly introduced subject areas of social studies and expressive arts. Teachers and early years officers began to use the approach to frame thematic learning. The approach was widely used in Scottish schools and centres until the introduction of the 5-14 curriculum in the 1980s.
