it's been too long

but at last i’m back. work has been pretty nuts, but the social side of life is looking much healthier for the next wee while.
had a bizarre experience on Saturday watching Scotland v USA. Interesting going to a meaningless international not to watch your nation. Went with big Simeon and talked mostly about the mighty Ross County. Also enjoyed the heckling and banter (aka abuse) flowing from the terraces, directed at the inbred/red-neck/american players… most fun!
Gareth is now older than he was then. helped eat his cake and for remembrace Sunday played Battlefront 2 ! Interesting symbolic act.
Gigs a plenty this week with The Decemberists and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah coming to town to play at the ABC. Join me!

Baxters Original

Went to see Tom Baxter at King Tuts. I love that venue. For someone who has made his name (or made what name he has made!) in the realm of chilled acoustic singer songwriter stuff he did a pretty good job of trying to liven things up. Unfortunately he saved most of that for the end of the gig.

The music would be more suited to a venue where you can sit down and drink wine! It was that relaxed. Why do people pay money to go to gigs and then proceed to talk through the songs? Surely if you want to do that you go to a pub with a jukebox, or cheesy cover band? I just don’t get it. Guess I go for the music rather than to be with a group of friends, although you can talk before and after the gig and inbetween the songs. Slightly annoying.

Sufjan @ Oran-Mor

No catchy title for this one (is there ever). went to see the brilliant Sufjan Stevens play at the Oran-Mor with Big ScottP. Link central!

Amazing stuff! Sufjan and the bands are excellent entertainers and performers. Cheerleaders and banjo! Where else would you get such a combination? It works. The full house was delighted. Combine that with soulfull chunes and sheer talent and you are heading for a great gig.

grrreat so it is

Belfast. Them 2 Us 3. We hadn’t scored for ages. Then we got 3! 1,100 of us went nuts. It was great. Then other people went nuts. It kicked off in the main street on the way home. It kicked off in the pub at night. Boys who had been to the outposts of Europe- Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, and Moldova chose Belfast as the place they felt most at risk and intimidated. Scary Mary! Wasn’t all bad though. Met a couple of great guys who sort of rescued a few of us from walking into a mass brawl.

FlyBE got me there quicker than I can get to Tesco. A local bar, the Botanic had devoted its upper floor to pre-match entertainment. The “stadium” was interesting. The atmosphere great. Photo’s taken with phone…

No Velvet in sight…

Went to See Revolver. Will go and see Revolver again. What the…? Channel 4 film review says: “The decision to omit the end credits, and instead finish the film with Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata accompanied by a blank screen, is certainly bold but only seals the sense of incomprehension.”
Interesting. Curious. Down right Twin Peaks esque in parts. David Lynch would have been proud. I was just waiting for the “little man from another place” to appear… Worth a shout though, even if it has taken a slagging from the critics…

History Lessons…

never used to be like this… went to see A (Brief) History of Violence. An interesting film. Very well made, some good performances, good plot and story. It just seems to be too short. Although I need to think about it a bit more, I didn’t feel satisfied by this film. It did exactly what it said it should have, proved entertaining, gruesome and intriguing, but it left me wanting something more. I guess that is a good sign.

Aragorn is good in it. Handles guns just as well as he handled swords. Kept wanting to hum the Lord of the Rings film every time he appeared on screen though…
