Deep Friday

Yes, that is Friday and not Fried Mars Bar!

A few years ago I while working in a high school in Inverness I used some statistics about what the world would be like if reduced, in proportion, to a village of 100 people. You can see this a lot more powerfully at the highly visual Miniature Earth(stats may be slightly dated now).

I also stumbled across the following video (YouTube link) which is linked to this inspirational story!

Howling Bells…

Trying to think of an imaginative title, got stuck in a Banshee Mad Murcoch sidetrack… anyway.

Howling Bells + King Tuts + Me = Fantastic Gig.

When you listen to their album, the music is pleasing with some attitude. But it is mostly quite dreamy – in a rock way!

However, this band live? Wow. Fantastic. The 3 guys create some amount of volume, with some magical and mysterious sounds being emitted too. Lead singer, Juanita Stein, seemed to exist in her very own ‘dreamy aura stasis bubble’™! To me (maybe it was a guy thing), this was both captivating and entrancing. To be honest, I could watch her sing anything! Must be the eyes.

Virtually all the tracks came off their s/t album – only the rockometer was cranked up a few notches. Also featuring in the set list was ‘False Eyelashes’ by Dolly Parton, linking to:

Support was offered by shotgun lovin moonshine drinkin Indigo Moss (?)… from Basingstoke or somewhere… not enough room for some decent yeeee haaaaarrrrrrr…

Linktastic.

This weekend I have been mostly procrastinating within the city limits of Glasgow (not Austin Texas – their City Limits are something else!).

Got some new, well old, CDs from the excellent and reasonable Fopp. The elderly Spoon and Rafter by Mojave 3 – which I had as MP3s – but there’s something about holding a CD case? Is there really? A similar story applies to Jocktastic Camera Obscura.

I also saw my matetastic Calamateur at The Goat – a nice wee pub with a big website.

Irishmusos David Kitt and The Frames have released albums across the water, will have to try and get some sent over. Kittser is playing a number of Scottish gigs. Unfortunately the majority are supporting The Magic Clones, sorry The Magic Numbers, who I don’t think I could listen to. Luckily he is playing in Edinburgh, at the interesting Cabaret Voltaire.

Gig watch: Howling Bells and The Dears coming soon to Glaswegian venues near you.

10 links, not bad.

The Tower of…

This week at work has not been spent at work. In a rather cunning use of funding, we have been taking a group of 10 pupils out on Outdoor Education to try to improve their listening, group working and self-esteem.

On a hill walk up nearby Dumyat, we managed to clear cloud level (yes, we are as high as an aeroplane!). The Wallace Monument tried desperately to break through to the sun… My phone couldn’t quite capture it, but you can just see it breaking through… (Yes, it is from Lord of the Rings!)

very worrying

I found this very worrying indeed.

1. Goodbye My Lover – James Blunt
2. Angels – Robbie Williams
3. I’ve Had the Time of My Life – Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley
4. Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler
5. Pie Jesu – Requiem

I mean, where is Stomp by Steps? Guess we should be glad that Celine Dion is out of the top 10.
