Ricky Gervais was doing stand up on Channel 4 the other night. One of the thoughts he conveyed was our assumption that Humpty Dumpty is an egg! Where do we get this from? Illustrations. Illustrations made by whom and when? If you were in charge of ALL the kings horses and men, would you lead them away from military duty to try to put an egg back together? Plus, how and why did a giant egg climb up a wall?
There is nothing like the FA Cup. It is wonderful to see a player who earns in a year what another player earns in a week giving said rich player the run around. Something refreshing about it. Humbling? Encouraging? Equalising! Long may it continue.
wow, that’s so true! maybe Humpty Dumpty WAS the King, or even the Queen- who’s to say what gender he/she/it is!? oh, here;s some ground-breaking info: History: From the East Anglia Tourist Board in England:”Humpty Dumpty was a powerful cannon during the English Civil War (1642-49).It was mounted on top of the St Mary’s at the Wall Church in Colchester defending the city against siege in the summer of 1648. (Although Colchester was a Parliamentarian stronghold, it had been captured by the Royalists and they held it for 11 weeks.) The church tower was hit by the enemy and the top of the tower was blown off, sending “Humpty” tumbling to the ground. Naturally the King’s men* tried to mend him but in vain.”* NB: The “men” would have been infantry, and “horses” the cavalry troops.http://www.zelo.com/family/nursery/humpty.aspor there’s a contrasting history here: http://www.acsu.k12.vt.us/~Gemignani/pawareness.htmlsigh, how will we ever know the truth!?!
