No one should underestimate the impact that bullying can have on a person\u2019s life. It can cause<br \/>\nhigh levels of distress, affecting young people\u2019s well-being, behaviour, personal and social development.<br \/>\nAt Sgoil an Iochdair, we are committed to supporting the development of the whole child within a<br \/>\nsupportive, caring, happy and safe environment and have a Positive Relationships &amp; Behaviour Policy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1389\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/es\/public\/sgoilaniochdaireileansiar\/uploads\/sites\/3769\/2025\/10\/07134956\/PBP-300x65.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"65\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/es\/public\/sgoilaniochdaireileansiar\/uploads\/sites\/3769\/2025\/10\/07134956\/PBP-300x65.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/es\/public\/sgoilaniochdaireileansiar\/uploads\/sites\/3769\/2025\/10\/07134956\/PBP.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Aims<\/span><br \/>\nThe aim of this policy is to ensure that our school is a safe place for children and young people to be,<br \/>\nby working together as a school community, staff, parents \/ carers and pupils to:<br \/>\n\u25aa Prevent bullying &#8211; Promoting a positive ethos and fostering the self-esteem of young people<br \/>\nwhile ensuring a clear message that bullying will not be tolerated.<br \/>\n\u25aa Raise Awareness &#8211; of the different forms of bullying.<br \/>\n\u25aa Respond and Share Information \u2013 with clear procedures for dealing with and recording matters<br \/>\nof concern.<br \/>\n\u25aa Support &#8211; those experiencing bullying and those who are displaying bullying behaviour.<br \/>\nWhat is Bullying?<br \/>\n\u201cBullying is face to face and\/or online behaviour which impacts on a person\u2019s sense of physical and<br \/>\nemotional safety, their capacity to feel in control of their life and their ability to respond effectively to<br \/>\nthe situation they are in.<br \/>\nThe behaviour does not need to be repeated, or intended to cause harm, for it to have an impact.<br \/>\nBullying Behaviour can be physical, emotional or verbal and can cause people to feel hurt, threatened,<br \/>\nfrightened and left out.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2013 Respect for All: The National Approach to Anti Bullying for Scotland\u2019s Children and Young People<br \/>\nBullying behaviours can be face to face or online and include Emotional bulling e.g. excluding, ignoring,<br \/>\ninsulting, Physical bullying, e.g. pushing, tripping, kicking, hitting or any use of violence, Verbal Bullying<br \/>\ne.g. name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing, threats, Online e.g. Sending abusive messages<br \/>\nor images and or taking or damaging belongings.<br \/>\nBullying may be related to:<br \/>\n\u25aa Age<br \/>\n\u25aa Gender<br \/>\n\u25aa Culture<br \/>\n\u25aa Race \u2013 ethnic origin, colour or nationality<br \/>\n\u25aa Religion or belief \u2013 including lack of belief<br \/>\n\u25aa ASN or disability<br \/>\n\u25aa Appearance or health condition<br \/>\n\u25aa Home \/ Family circumstances<br \/>\n\u25aa Relationships<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Impact of Bullying Behaviour<\/span><br \/>\nBullying behaviour impacts on the wellbeing of those affected and can be a major barrier to learning<br \/>\nand social and emotional development. It is the responsibility of all adults in the learning setting to listen<br \/>\nto, respect and support any child or young person who may be experiencing bullying behaviours.<br \/>\nPossible alert signals for staff and parents to look out for include:<br \/>\n\u25aa Changes to behaviour<br \/>\n\u25aa Non-attendance \/ reluctance to attend school<br \/>\n\u25aa Withdrawal from routine activities<br \/>\n\u25aa Anxiety<br \/>\n\u25aa Depression<br \/>\n\u25aa Aggression<br \/>\n\u25aa Demonstrating bullying behaviours towards others<br \/>\n\u25aa Eating issues<br \/>\n\u25aa Self-harm and suicidal thoughts<br \/>\n\u25aa Physical changes to appearance<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Prevention<\/span><br \/>\nAt Sgoil an Iochdair we:<br \/>\n\u25aa Promote a culture where bullying behaviour is unacceptable and children, young people and staff<br \/>\nmodel positive, respectful behaviours<br \/>\n\u25aa Raise awareness through circle time, whole school assemblies, Anti-bullying week, internet safety<br \/>\nweek, posters and buddy system<br \/>\n\u25aa Ensure appropriate supervision of areas that are high risk i.e. corridors, cloakrooms, playgrounds<br \/>\nAction \u2013 School Staff<br \/>\nThe following steps may be taken if bullying is suspected or reported:<br \/>\n\u25aa A clear and precise account of the incident will be recorded<br \/>\n\u25aa All concerned will be spoken to and details recorded<br \/>\n\u25aa Parents will be informed<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Action &#8211; Pupils<\/span><br \/>\nPupils who experience bullying behaviour will be supported by:<br \/>\n\u25aa Offering an immediate opportunity to discuss the experience with a member of staff<br \/>\n\u25aa Offering reassurance and ongoing support including a review meeting<br \/>\n\u25aa Restoring self-esteem and confidence<br \/>\nPupils who are displaying bullying behaviours will be helped by:<br \/>\n\u25aa Discussing what happened and how they became involved<br \/>\n\u25aa Establishing the wrong doing and the need to change<br \/>\n\u25aa Informing parents\/carers to help change the attitude and behaviour of the child<br \/>\n\u25aa a review meeting to monitor changes<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Action &#8211; Parents\/ Carers<\/span><br \/>\nParents\/ Carers who discover their child is experiencing bullying behaviour will be encouraged to:<br \/>\n\u25aa Talk to the child about it<br \/>\n\u25aa Encourage the child to talk to a trusted adult in the school<br \/>\n\u25aa Inform the school as soon as possible<br \/>\nParents\/Carers who discover their child is displaying bullying behaviour will be encouraged to:<br \/>\n\u25aa Calmly talk to the child about it and try and find out why the child is doing it<br \/>\n\u25aa Ensure that the child knows that the behaviour is not acceptable<br \/>\n\u25aa Support the child to find something he\/she can do well in order to help change the behaviour<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Reporting and Recording Incidents of Bullying<\/span><br \/>\nThe school will ensure that all pupils know how important it is to report incidents of bullying that they have witnessed or suffered.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The school will:<\/span><br \/>\n\u25aa provide pupils with opportunities to communicate their concerns<br \/>\n\u25aa ensure staff, pupils and parents work in partnership<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Consequences<\/span><br \/>\n\u25aa See Positive Relationships and Behaviour Policy.<br \/>\nMonitoring, Evaluation and Review<br \/>\nThe school will review this policy regularly to assess its\u2019 effectiveness.<br \/>\nUpdated: September 2025 Next review: August 2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sgoil an Iochdair Anti-Bullying Policy\u00a0 \u00a0 &nbsp; Introduction All children and young people have the right to live without the fear of being threatened, assaulted or harassed.
