At Williamwood High School, the art and design department presents an average of 100 National 5 candidates every year. This is the highest presentation in Scotland. Subsequently over three quarters of these pupils go on to take Higher, again the largest presentation in Scotland.

National 4 and 5 is a common course and provides learners with a broad, practical experience of art and design skills and related Art and Design Studies.

The National 5 course is worth 200 marks and is divided into two components; expressive/design course and art and design studies.

These two components are made up of unit work and course work. Unit work is internally assessed and verified.  The course work comprises of a portfolio which is externally assessed by  SQA (a combined 73% of total mark). The expressive and design folios are worth 100 marks each. The Art and Design studies is a one hour and ten minutes written examination worth 25 marks.
