the National 4 and 5 courses is to develop pupils\u2019 knowledge and understanding of Geography about people, how we live in, adapt to and change our planet.\u00a0 It is the science of the environment, related to people.\u00a0 Geography is part social science and part physical science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CONTENT<br \/>\n<\/strong>The course is divided into three units:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit 1\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Physical Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This involves the study of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Different landscapes in Britain, how people live in them and develop them and the conflicts and management issues arising as a result.<\/li>\n<li>Glaciated upland areas and coastal scenery are studied.<\/li>\n<li>Ordnance Survey map skills.<\/li>\n<li>Geographical fieldwork skills are further developed during an excursion to Loch Lomond in May.<\/li>\n<li>Weather systems that affect the UK and the impacts of climate change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Unit 2\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 Human Environments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students study:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Global population issues and their impacts on development.<\/li>\n<li>Economic development in relation to cities and countryside.<\/li>\n<li>Case studies of urban and rural life are studied for more developed and less developed countries.<\/li>\n<li>These skills are developed during an excursion to Glasgow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Unit 3\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Global Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pupils will study a topic on world health and a topic on environmental hazards.<\/p>\n<p>The health unit examines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Factors affecting health issues in different parts of the world.<\/li>\n<li>Detailed case studies of heart disease, AIDS and malaria are included along with studies of other mortality factors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The hazards unit examines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Causes, key features and impacts of earthquakes, volcanoes and tropical storms.<\/li>\n<li>Preparing for natural disasters and methods of reducing their impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Detailed case studies of Mount Saint Helens, 2011 Japan or Haiti earthquake and Hurricane Katrina.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>HOW WILL IT BE ASSESSED?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the end of each unit, candidates sit an internal assessment. At the end of the course they sit an external examination set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pupils will sit an <strong>added value unit<\/strong> in S4. This will be a project relating to river fieldwork.
