Lovers by Brian Friel is a play in two parts set in rural Northern Ireland in the 1960’s.
The first section of Lovers, titled “Winners” follows the story of two teenage lovers, Joe and Mag who are due to be married in 3 weeks time as Mag is expecting a child. The play is set on top of Ardnageeha hill as Mag and Joe revise for their exams.
“Losers” is a play about two older lovers, Hanna and Andy, who are trying to make their relationship work while living under the rule of Hanna’s religious mother, Mrs Wilson, and her ally Cissy, the intrusive next door neighbour. Mrs Wilson tries to break up their relationship by constantly ringing her bell, interrupting Hanna and Andy’s passionate interludes.
