Moving On Up…

Here are photos of our fabulous pre-school children receiving their school tie and graduation certificate this June. Congratulations!
We will miss you very much and we wish you all a wonderful time in Primary 1 and a very happy future.

Bugs Glorious Bugs

There has been much excitement among all the nursery groups over looking at various live insects and mini-beasts these past weeks. The children have shown a huge interest in learning about them and caring for them:
– On trips to Busby church gardens we have found wood lice, worms, millipedes, slugs and beetles under damp logs and studied them with magnifiers. We looked up more about them in books too.


– In our nursery garden the children have prepared their Bug Hotel and have been excited to observe a few visitors, like spiders.

– The children have also been studying four snails in the outdoor classroom. We found that snails love to eat basil and that they each have four antennae, two for seeing, and two for smelling and feeling.


The children were fascinated to watch the snails come out of their shells and observe how they move and eat, and the trails they leave. They gave the snails names too.
“This one is called Rainbow Drop.”
“This is Daisy.”
“Let’s feed them. They like to eat this”
“Look, they’re kissing!”
“They have slime under them.”

– And we have also all been following the journey of our nursery caterpillars with great excitement:

The children watched them journey through their life cycle, turning from caterpillars to chrysalides and then last week to beautiful tortoiseshell butterflies.

They were so excited to release our butterflies into the wild. Suggestions for names of the butterflies were also very interesting.  Toby, Neeva and Pixie were a few of the favourites.
It’s been so good to watch the children loving and appreciating nature.

The children have been busy working  with staff doing all kinds of Planting and Growing. We have created a Herb Garden and an outdoor and indoor Vegetable Garden, which are all thriving.

The children have grown Grassheads (“We cut their hair with scissors ‘cos it was growing too long”), and have planted rosemary, basil, radishes, carrots, courgettes, peas, tomatoes, spring onions, potatoes and runner beans, plus marigolds and bluebells for butterflies. They have been excited to watch the plants grow and have been watering and measuring them.
“We need sun, water and soil.”
“Butterflies like marigolds.”
“We looked after them.”

In Fitness Week we’ve all been honing our athletic skills with a variety of challenges. The children have been using and building on their core strength, balance and co-ordination, jumping, hopping, throwing and catching skills. The sunny weather has given us the perfect conditions for our sporty week!

The Busby Bug Hotel is Open for Business!


The Red and Green groups have been busy packing our bug hotel with leaves, damp wood and straw to attract some new guests. They also planted marigolds around it. So far some wood lice and a spider have visited!

The children have also been excitedly watching the sunflower seeds they planted starting to grow, as well as measuring them.


Later they tried some Transient Art to create beautiful sunflower pictures.

The children have also been showing off their creative talents in their Block Play, in the sand pits and in  junk modelling. They are building increasingly complex structures as they work imaginatively and cooperatively in teams. They have recently constructed walkways, animal homes and a giant robot costume! WOW!

Fun in the Sun

The children in the Purple, Blue, Green and Red groups have settled well back into nursery. We have been taking advantage of the lovely weather with lots of exciting outdoor learning experiences such as pouring/ filling in water tray, painting, planting, reading and developing our gross motor skills on the bikes.

In Arran the children have been getting into the Christmas spirit – role-playing and hammering in the elves’ workshop, potting their hyacinths in silver pots, creating seasonal artwork, using clay to design decorations of their choice, counting penguins, making cards, calendars, lanterns and much more…
What a busy bunch!
Outdoors we have been exploring the properties of ice and enjoying frosty walks to Busby church gardens.
Role Play: “It’s a polar landscape.”

Literacy: In the Story Box,  The Gruffalo’s Child has been very popular, with the children keen to act out the story and make up their own versions using the props for character and setting.
Stick Man has been another seasonal favourite story to explore.

We also read Little Owl and the Christmas Star and looked at different types of stars, before the children designed their own.

Rolling, moulding, cutting, imprinting: the Red, Yellow & Pink groups experimented with clay and water to create stars, snowmen and other decorations,  using beads and various implements to make patterns, then metallic paints with varnish to finish them off.

The children were very proud of their different shining stars. We hope you enjoy hanging them on your tree or around the house!

Science: Planting & Growing: We have been watching the hyacinth bulbs that we planted start to grow. The children repotted them in silver pots for you and hope you enjoy the flowers later at home.

Science: Ice Experiments: nature has kindly provided us with lots of thick ice shapes to investigate and experiment with.

We have been gradually adding to our Kindness/ Christmas Tree with snowflake decorations, sunshine sticks and kind deeds.

We have been very busy  this week exploring many different ways to enhance our health and wellbeing.   Let’s have a look at some of the fabulous experiences  the Red Group have been doing.

Crazy hair and yoga cobra pose!     

Yoga can be done anywhere you feel comfortable! Trying out  the spider pose …..this strengthens and activates core muscles….also…..helps to refine fine motor skills (e.g writing and dressing) by activating shoulder muscles and many more benefits, as well as being relaxing and lots of fun challenging yourself!

******Making a Rainbow🌈 ******

What do we need to make a rainbow?

Let’s investigate!

“Sun, rain, and maybe with a torch?”
Did you know that you can split the light using a CD?

We tried this using a CD and a torch .

“I see all the colour, it’s a success!!”
“I love science experiments”

We discovered that bright white light is made up of different colours of light all mixed together.We tried to think of things with all the colours of the rainbow for our experiment……We could use:

  “the wee sweet bright things you can eat?”

“Oh look the colours all mixing up”

“That’s going brown”

“It’s really making a rainbow”

This experiment didn’t quite work out!   We thought using water and sun we would somehow create a rainbow?  Maybe try a holding up a glass of water in a sunny place until you see a rainbow on the floor next time?   However we did discover you need light to see your reflection!  We also noticed our shadows on the ground when it was really sunny, then when it clouded over they disappeared.   Sometimes scientists repeat experiments and get different results depending on  lots of factors like the environment or method.  (During our experiment a fly flew into the water………..which may spark another type of investigation!)
