Curriculum
Broad General Education
In S1 and S2, you will study the beliefs and practices that shape the worldviews and values of people around the world, including from religious and non-religious viewpoints.
In S3 you will have chosen to specialise in Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS). You will continue to explore key concepts related to the belief and practices of at least one major world religion and engage with contemporary ethical and philosophical debates.
Senior Phase
In S4 you will study RMPS under different topics at National 4 or National 5 level:
- World Religion: Buddhism
- Morality and Belief: Morality and Justice
- Religious and Philosophical Questions: The Problem of Suffering and Evil
Pupils will also plan, research and write-up an Assignment to demonstrate their essay-writing and research skills.
At Higher level, you will continue to extend your knowledge of the religious beliefs and practices of a major world religion, deepen your understanding of contemporary moral issues and engage in more complex academic debate on philosophical theories. The topics studied as part of the Higher course are:
- World Religion: Christianity
- Morality and Belief: Morality and Justice
- Religious and Philosophical Questions: Origins
Pupils in Higher will also produce an Assignment based on information collected via independent research using a range of primary and secondary sources.
Learning Experiences
Pupils will study core RME for one period per week from S1 to S4. They will then have the option to pursue the study of Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies (RMPS) in S3/4 and beyond. All pupils will continue to study core RME regardless of whether they choose RMPS during the options process.
At all stages of RME, pupils can expect to work both independently and collaboratively in a wide range of contexts to develop key skills in the subject. These include:
- Philosophical debates and ethical case studies: Engaging in structured discussions on ethical dilemmas and big questions, as well as analysing real-world moral issues and decision-making processes.
- Mindfulness and meditation practices: Experiencing different spiritual and reflective techniques.
- Film and media analysis: Discussing philosophical and ethical themes in popular culture.
- Research projects: In-depth investigations into a range of contemporary religious, moral or philosophical issues in Scotland, the UK and around the world.
- Guest speaker sessions and educational visits: Pupils in RMPS regularly benefit from talks from faith leaders, as well as enjoying visits to Glasgow High Court and the Samye Ling Buddhist Monastery.
Life and Work
Studying RMPS can provide numerous benefits for your later life and career. Here are just some of the ways RMPS can prepare you for life, work and learning:
- Ethical reasoning: RMPS develops your ability to analyse moral dilemmas and make reasoned ethical decisions. This skill is crucial for medical professionals and corporate compliance officers who often grapple with complex moral issues.
- Cultural awareness: Studying various religious and philosophical traditions enhances your understanding of diverse cultures. This knowledge is highly beneficial for those with careers in international business, tourism and transport.
- Critical thinking: RMPS encourages you to question assumptions and evaluate arguments critically. This skill is essential for lawyers, journalists and academic researchers who need to analyse complex information objectively.
- Dialogue and debate skills: You will learn to discuss sensitive topics respectfully and articulate your views clearly. These skills are particularly useful for public relations professionals, politicians and broadcasters.
- Textual analysis: Studying religious and philosophical texts improves your ability to interpret and analyse complex writings. This skill is beneficial for editors, literary critics and archivists who work with intricate documents.
