Pirate Fun!

Pirates ahoy!
Pirates ahoy!

We are settling back into our nursery routine and looking forward to the summer term. Our imaginative area has become a Pirate Ship by popular demand and we are having great fun telling imaginative pirate stories. We are being the author and illustrator of our stories!
Even more exciting is our new nursery Twitter page. Please follow us @giffnocknursery and you’ll be able to keep bang up to date with what we are getting up to and also find all sorts of useful information.
Our forest visits restart on Thursday for our preschool children so no doubt it will be raining! Every cloud has a silver lining however as we have just taken delivery of our new rainsuits and are keen to try them out!

Fire Engine Fun

We voted for a new imaginative area recently and there was an overwhelming vote in favour of a fire station/engine. We couldn’t believe our luck when a real fire engine arrived from Clarkston fire station and we got to climb into the cab and  try on hemets and breathing apparatus! We squirted the hoses at the trees and the wall and great fun was had by all.

That was our last forest visit till after the Easter break when a new group of children will go. We have been learning to use tools safely, build nests and dens and have been finding out about what creatures might live in the underground house that we found. Magnifying glasses and torches came in very handy here!

We are looking forward to a well earned break over Easter and wish everyone a happy holiday. Remember to get outside and play!

Winter Fun

The afternoon nursery class have just successfully performed their assembly in front of parents, carers and Primary 1 to 3. They were amazing!

The theme was Winter Fun and they showed off what they’ve been learning and experiencing at nursery in the winter weather 🙂

We are looking forward to starting our Forest Visits again this week with a group of preschool children. Let’s hope Spring is in the air soon!

Welcome back!

We are back into our routine and having a busy time at nursery. We have just taken delivery of some lovely new resources and watched with interest as the children ignored them, preferring to play with the cardboard boxes they came in. We thought you might enjoy this short film about “The Adventures of a Cardboard Box.”

August-September 2014

We were delighted to welcome back our children in August and also to meet our new children. They have all settled in well and new friendships have been forged.

We have been so busy in the last few weeks and have started our Tuesday forest visits (thanks all parent/carer helpers SO much!). We are enjoying the opportunity to explore our local woodland and observe the creatures, plants and trees which live there. We enjoyed picking brambles in the woods and making apple and bramble crumble and bramble jam with them! Yum!

Our younger children got the train to Pollok Park to have a look at the Highland cows and their babies (calves!) and enjoyed collecting leaves and nuts along the way. Well done. It was a long walk!

On a sporting note we have enjoyed visits from Giffnock Tennis Club and are now having Mini Kicker sessions on Fridays.

We will be taking part in science workshops this week too! We really do provide a variety of experiences as I’m sure you’ll agree!

Dave and Popcorn have started their sleepovers again and if you don’t already know about this you soon will! Thank you for sharing so much fun with the bears.

Garden Party!

Thanks to all who attended our end of term garden party.  The children had a wonderful time working with Primary 1 to plan, create and host the event.  The children from both Primary 1 and the nursery learned a lot about growing things as well as the skills to work as part of a team.  Luckily the sun was shining (and wind blowing!) and everyone had a fantastic time.

Enjoying The Festivities!

There has been much excitement in the nursery this month!

We have been on a train trip to Glasgow to see the sights and sounds of the city at Christmas time. We enjoyed Hopscotch Theatre Company’s pantomime and performed our own little Nativity in front of an audience. A special visitor is expected at our Christmas party tomorrow and the afternoon children will attend the church service on Friday.

Our mud-kitchen is becoming well established (“It’s just like Masterchef!” commented Christopher) and thank you to all parents who have donated equipment 

We have been busy making cards and decorations and learning all about why we celebrate Christmas. We have had fun playing interactive whiteboard games on the computer including counting presents and matching them to the correct number and finding numbers on the advent calendar.

We look forward to seeing you in the New Year and hearing all about how the children spent their holiday.

Autumn

Autumn has arrived in the nursery class. We have been exploring our environment using our senses. Ella: “I found stones in the feely box and they were hard if you tapped them you could make music.” Eva used her observation skills to paint a beautiful picture in the nursery garden. “We saw a rainbow. Sun and rain makes a rainbow.”

In our nursery forest Joseph found nuts. “Squirrels eat them. They are hard circles. They fall down and the animals eat them.” Christopher found a pine cone. “It was spiky and opened up when the sun came out. The wind made them fall down.”

We are looking forward to learning about customs and festivals during October and November.
