STEM 2019: Rocket Balloons

Another exciting experiment! We created our hypothesis about which balloon would travel the furthest along a piece of wire, a large medium or small balloon. We conducted our experiment and measured how far each balloon travelled. Then, we spoke about the science behind it.

Our little scientists learnt all about the gas molecules escaping the balloon and colliding with the gas molecule in the air to push it along the wire.

STEM Week 2019 Lava Lamps

We had great fun today learning about chemical reactions by making our very own lava lamps! We spoke about why the water and oil do not mix and that when we add an effervescent tablet, the gas produced tries to escape creating the bubbles. Here are the steps so we can try it at home:

  1. Fill half of your tube with water and 3/4 with vegetable oil.
  2. Add 5 drops of food colouring.

3.  Add 1/4 of an effervescent tablet and watch what happens!

Happy Chinese New Year!

We have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We now know that the Chinese use animals to represent their years and that 2019 is the year of the Pig.  We read the story that tells us of different animals having a race across the river to decide which 12 animals would represent the years.

We used our sequencing skills to sequence the years numerically. We discovered that we have lots of rabbits and some dragons in our class!
