Term 3

This term, Primary 5b have started to work on percentages which is linked to all the fraction and  division work that  we carried out during remote learning. We will also be moving onto capacity and continue to practise more difficult word problems which involve a few mathematical processes.

Well done everyone for completing our project on ‘Scottish Wars of Independence’. Some of us chose to make PowerPoints, posters and even detailed models to share with our class. We really enjoyed ‘Leading Our Learning’ and also linked this to listening respectfully towards others. We are now going to focus on lots of activities connected to ‘ Rights Respecting School’.

This week, we celebrated ‘Earth Day’ by reminding ourselves and others about how to save the planet by recycling, reducing waste and planting trees. During outdoor learning, we are going to take a closer look at the trees we planted in our school. We hope that they are growing well! We worked in small groups to create wonderful posters that reinforced the message ‘Save Our Planet’.

December 2020

Primary 5b have been very busy during December. We have been learning all the symbols of Advent and linking these to our comprehension work. We particulary enjoyed making our Advent wreaths during outdoor learning. It was great to see that lots of other classes loved our idea of making a wreath and decided to have a go themselves. We also had a secret friend in our class which we had to be extra kind and caring towards. We are so proud of ourselves as we managed to raise £64 for our charity. Wow!!!

In numeracy and mathematics, we have been working on handling data. We have recorded data using tally marks and we are now more confident at reading bar graphs and charts. Mrs Bovaird said that we should all continue to work on division with remainders. As always, check for the key words  to solve more difficult word problems.

Our mini topic on ‘Christmas around the World’ has been really interesting and we have completed lots of different activities. We hope you enjoyed our performance on Google Classroom.

Primary 5b wish everyone a very ‘Happy Christmas and New Year’.

Keep Safe

November 2020

Primary 5b have had a really busy month. We started the month remembering all the Saints and all the Souls. We wrote special prayers in our Religious jotter and spent time reflecting on all those who died for us in the wars. We have also been learning about ‘HONOURING JESUS AS THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE’ during Catholic Education Week. Some of the children in our class presented a PowerPoint on Diwali which was very exciting and interesting. We loved the colours and lights!

In Numeracy and Mathematics, we have been revising division with remainders. We have also been solving challenging word problems. We have continued to work on area and perimeter and multiples and factors.  It has been very important for us to remember to circle or highlight key mathematical language as our work often requires us to complete a few calculations before eventually answering the question.

In language, we have been working on using similes and contractions in our written work. In writing, we wrote imaginative stories on getting lost in places in Scotland and have now moved onto writing instructions. Next week, we can choose our own title for writing instructions. We have also been working hard on making notes and of course, writing a book review on our favourite book during ‘Book Week’.

In Science, we finished our topic on Solid, Liquid and Gases and have now moved onto the Water Cycle. We are enjoying learning all the vocabulary connected to this as well as their meanings. We have continued to learn about Scottish festivals and are about to begin a mini project on’ Christmas around the World’. We are going to connect this to our work during Advent.

In outdoor learning, we have making bug and hedgehog hotels using wood, leaves, mud and sticks. We have been keeping active during ‘Beat the Street’ and also playground games. We have reinforced alphabetical order by using our senses to collect information. Great fun!

October 2020 Primary 5b

This month primary 5b has been very busy taking part in lots of activities.

In maths, we have been learning the properties of 2d and 3d shapes and we have linked this to our outdoor learning using stones to create the shapes. This involved working together in teams to ensure the shapes were correctly formed. We have now started learning about how to find the area of squares and rectangles. To find the volume of cubes and cuboids, we simply multiply the length, breadth and height. We have continued to work on multiplying numbers by a single digit. As always, we practise our mathematical language to help us with more difficult word problems.

In writing, we have been finishing personal writing and have written all about our October break. In order to plan our Autumn poem, we walked around the playground and looked for signs of Autumn. Then we used this to develop our vocabulary to produce our written piece. This week, we moved on to imaginative writing and wrote a story about Hallowe’en Night. We have continued to use adverbs, adjectives and adverbial phrases in all our written tasks.

In science, we have completed the last part in our ‘Solids , Liquids and Gases’ topic. We investigated the weight of gas by weighting four different fizzy drinks. We found out that diet coke and tango contained the most carbon dioxide. This term, we are going to  learn about famous scottish festivals.

‘Beat the Street’ has been a great way to keep fit and we have completed a 3K and 5K walk. In Art, we created ‘Haunted Houses’ pictures inspired by Tim Burton. In I.C.T, we have learned how to use Sway and Spreadsheets.

We are all really excited about the Hallowe’en parties tomorrow!!!

Primary 5b

Primary 5b have been very busy since returning to school in August. We have really enjoyed all our outdoor learning. We have linked this to mathematics and physical fitness. It has been great fun planning and  building circuits for the rest of our class as well as visiting the forest to develop our knowledge on shape and measurement. We have even played lots of games in P.E that have taught us how to remember angles, directions and place value.

In class, we have been learning all about the cities and places of interest  in Scotland. We have used our mindfulness sessions to listen to Scottish music. This was so relaxing and we wrote about it in our learning journals.

In writing, we have focused on personal writing and  poetry. We particularly enjoyed writing about how to change the world and of course, our Holy Communion Day. It was a wonderful day and our class party really made us feel special. It was great to be able to wear our own clothes, play lots of games and receive special Communion party bags.

We hope you have all enjoyed seeing our wonderful photographs on twitter. Primary 5b love to share  and update our families on our learning experiences.

Our learning in February

We have been learning lots in February we hope you enjoy reading about our learning 🙂

Celts and Romans

We love learning about Celts and Romans here are some of the things we’ve done.

We have collected information from the Chromebooks and put them into bullet point notes in our jotters. Then we took the information and started to make posters this week. Each group has a different topic and at the end, we’re going to teach one another about what we’ve learned using our posters.

Oompa- loompa dance

We got in groups of  3,4 and 5  and we made up a dance in our pairs for the Augustus Gloop song to show the class.*This is our favourite line in charlie and the chocolate factory* Augustus I don’t think you should do that.

Thank you 🙂

We also learned and recited Scots poems to the class. We created Scots Dinosaurs in Art, for example,  ‘Hackitsaurus’, ‘Drookit-a-tops’, ‘Muckle-o-saurus’, ‘Sleekit-a-tops’ and ‘Bonnietops’, and we wrote fun Scots comic strips about them. We had to learn and use lots of Scots words and phrases in our writing. During our P.E time, we have been learning some Ceilidh dancing and so far, we know the Canadian Barn Dance and the Dashing White Sergeant.

P4B’s First Post of 2020!

Hello everyone! 🙂 P4B have made a great start to 2020 and we’ve been learning lots of exciting new things in class. Here are some of our highlights from the first 2 weeks back.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

We are reading a book called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl and we’ve been doing lots of activities related to the book! In writing this week, we made posters to tell the world that there are Five Golden Tickets to be won inside a bar of chocolate and the winner would get to visit Mr Wonka’s Factory. In our posters, we included a title, sub-heading, information, illustrations and bright colours.

Information Handling

In maths this week, we have learned how to collect, organise and display information on a table and bar graph. Everyone created their own survey and gathered information from the class to make a bar graph on their chosen topic. It was fun!

Sacraments

We have learned about the 7 sacraments of the Catholic Church and that they are a gift from God. Through the sacraments we receive Graces from Jesus. This term, we will be learning about and preparing for the Sacraments of Reconcilliation and Holy Communion.

Habitats and Food Chains

We have been learning about habitats and food chains. We now know that a habitat is where an animal lives and that it gives the animals shelter, food and protection.

We have also been learning about food chains and new scientific vocabulary such as producer and consumer. We created our own food chains and sequenced the consumers.

STEM week 2019: Tallest Tower

We worked in groups to build the tallest tower out of lollipop sticks and playdoh. We had to think about our structure and how best to stack the lollipop sticks.

We used great problem solving skills and communication skills to build our towers…. unfortunately some fell over!
