Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy are vital members of a vessel\u2019s onboard management team. Performing the role, also known as a Navigation Officer, means you\u2019ll be working on sophisticated and expensive vessels. You\u2019ll be in charge of valuable cargo and\/or passengers so it\u2019s a big responsibility.<\/p>\n
While on duty at sea, you\u2019ll be responsible for making decisions on steering and manoeuvring the ship, controlling navigation and communications. In port, you\u2019ll be responsible for cargo handling and ship stability.<\/p>\n
As Deck Officer, you\u2019ll also be heavily involved in the day to day safety of the vessel. All crew need to work as a team to maintain the ship and its equipment at optimum efficiency.<\/p>\n
This is a diverse role and every day is different, with your ultimate goal to become Captain of your own vessel.<\/p>\n
Study towards internationally recognised qualifications – HNC \/HND and Professional Diplomas available.<\/p>\n
You will also receive a Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) Certificate of Competency upon qualification.<\/p>\n
You will learn how to lead people in a highly pressurised environment, understanding your role as part of a management team.<\/p>\n
And you will navigate across the world\u2019s oceans to ensure your ship\u2019s crew and cargo arrive safely at their destination.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll have a head start in this vacancy if you\u2019ve completed a Foundation Apprenticeship in a related field. We\u2019ll need you to provide evidence of your qualification and show you gained the relevant skills from your placement<\/p>\n
All courses comprise of three years of study split into five phases, three of which are spent at college with the remaining two at sea.<\/p>\n
HNC\/HND route \u2013 You must hold a minimum of four qualifications including Maths, English and one science-based subject at 4-9 for A-C for National 5s and 1-3 for Standard Grades.<\/p>\n
Scottish Professional Diploma (SPD) \/ Foundation Degree (FD) route \u2013 You must hold at least 48 UCAS points from Highers or A-Levels including maths and\/or physics, plus the qualifications indicated for the HNC\/D course.<\/p>\n
BSc Hons route \u2013 in addition to HNC\/HND qualifications, you must hold at least 104 UCAS points from Highers, A-Levels and\/or degree (for engineering this must include a numerate subject).<\/p>\n
