Sustainable Development Goals 2030

In 2015, more than 190 world leaders committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help us all end extreme poverty, fight inequality & injustice, and fix climate change. We each have a role to play if we’re going to achieve these goals of a more prosperous, equitable, and sustainable world.

In Our Lady of the Missions Primary, during term 2, we will be looking at the SDGs and thinking about what we can do to ‘end poverty, protect our planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity’. Look out for our campaigns over the coming weeks.

See what you can do for each goal:

UNICEF and Clarks ShoeShare Appeal

UNCRC Article 28 – the right to education.

We take our education for granted in Scotland, but in many countries around the world there are children who for many reasons, mostly related to poverty, who cannot attend school. UNICEF and Clarks shoes have joined together to help these children get access to education.

On the last week of each month we will be taking donations of pairs of shoes that are still in a wearable condition to our local Clarks store at Silverburn. Please bring along any shoes your children have outgrown or you no longer wear and are still in perfectly good condition to the MENSA or the Junior Vestibule. We will monitor our progress and update the ShoeShare display in the link corridor every month. Together we can make a difference.

Global Schools Play Day

Article 31- the right to play

‘Play is key to raising attainment’                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Scottish Government

Classes throughout the school enjoyed playing and creating games and working together across stages during Global Schools Play Day. We even came together at breaktime to play board games. (see class blogs)

Children learn a great deal from playing and it is a very important part of learning. It helps use develop logic, social skills, problem solving strategies, effective communication and creativity amongst other things. It allows us to take what we have been learning in school, make sense of it and apply it to real life problems.

Digital 5Rights – Children’s Rights in the Digital Environment

One third of the internet users are under the age of 18 and children’s rights apply online as well as offline and we need to make the digital environment fit for children and childhood.

5Rights Foundation exists to articulate the rights of children in the digital environment.

The 5Rights Framework was developed with children, parents, teachers, academics, policymakers and technologists. The Framework reimagines the existing rights of children and interprets them for the digital environment. They are the minimum requirement for a child to enjoy a respectful and supportive relationship with the digital environment.

The 5Rights

The Right to Remove
The Right to Know
The Right to Safety and Support
The Right to Informed and Conscious Use
The Right to Digital Literacy

OutRight! Campaign – Air Pollution

We have been collecting signatures for our OutRight! Campaign. We wish to ensure that all children have clean air to breathe, live in a clean environment and are healthy. We are working with the Eco Reps and the Junior Road Safety Officers  on our campaign. We have written to Roseanna Cunningham – Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform. We have invited her into the school to discuss the Government’ clean air policy and to give her our petition. We hope she will also support the JRSO campaign against engine idling and irresponsible and dangerous parking around our school.

How Good is OUR School?

As part of our pupil leadership and pupil voice, groups of children lead self-assessment amongst the school community using the HGIOURS document. We make up questions and speak to pupils. We collect our answers on Mocrosoft Forms and use the results to help us work out what to do next  to make our school the best it can be.

The five areas are:-

Our Relationships

Our Learning and Teaching

Our School and Community

Our Health and Wellbeing

Our Successes and Achievements

Choose Respect Competition Winners

We had hundreds of entries in the Choose Respect Competition. The winning poster was chosen because we thought it showed what a diverse and inclusive school we are here at Our Lady of the Missions and it demonstrated clearly our school values –

kindness    respect    teamwork    independence    honesty    positivity

Our overall winner was Dana from P5. You will see her calendar all around the school. Take time to view all of our competition entries on display at the bottom of the link corridor.

What a great day we had in Edinburgh collecting an award for our waste awareness campaign from Zero Waste Scotland. Our sustainability groups worked together to create and carry out the campaign.

The RRSA planned from the UNCRC Articles.

The Guardians of the Garden visited Left Field Market Garden who supply food to our lunch hall.

The Eco Committee presented at assemblies to ensure that all pupils understood our campaign and considered what they could do about food waste.

Our Digital Leaders produced, filmed and edited the film of our food journey from farm to plate.

We received our award from Zero Waste Scotland and Education Scotland Food for Thought Campaign.

Our lunch was produced by social enterprise The Real Junk Food Project who intercept surplus food potentially on its way to landfill and create delicious meals. We had a lovely meal from ‘rescued’ cherry tomatoes, sandwiches with smoked salmon, camembert cheese and pickle and lovely cakes. We drank apple juice which was just beyond its ‘best before’ date.

It has inspired us to keep campaigning to protect the environment for our future.
