One Planet Picnic Application

Guardians of the Garden have entered the Gardening Scotland One Planet Picnic Garden Deign Competition. The winning deigns are showcased at Gardening Scotland in June. Fingers crossed.
The theme is ‘otters playing in a mountain stream’. The Guardians of the Garden have worked on this without any adult input and spent all of their lunch hours doing this over the last three weeks, researching:-
plants – local, seasonal and condition appropriate,  and
animals – otters which have been reintroduced into Scottish waters and
putting together their plan using materials and containers they can reuse – old tyres for the water fall, old tubes from the science room for the pump, recycled pots for the plants, leftover paints to decorate, dam from twigs and moss lying in the school grounds.
They intend to use an old pallet that we have in school to construct the garden. They will grow what plants they can from seed – including grasses and have sourced wetland plants via Angela Smith – RHS.
The children are passionate about their gardening projects and I am very proud of them and their commitment.

Thornliebank Together Funding Application

We have applied to the Thornliebank Together – You Decide Fund to help us replace our greenhouse which was burned down by vandals and create a community garden.

See our application below and please go along and vote for us.

We are in the process of developing an area of our school grounds as a community garden which families can use during weekends and school holidays and where our pupils and members of the local community can work together to grow fruit/ veg and herbs; perhaps arranging events and offering workshops for local people.
Our greenhouse was burned down and gardening equipment destroyed by vandals and we really need to replace it all so that we can grow and care for our plants. We have fund raised for equipment.

This project will hopefully offer mutually beneficial opportunities for inter generational working. Our young pupils would benefit from the expertise and experience of an older generation as they work together in the garden, developing cross generational empathy and understanding. It will help us develop a space for adults and children to spend time together enjoying the outdoors which can benefit mental, social and emotional health.
We want our children to have a clear understanding and appreciation of where their food comes from and to experience the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes from working outside and growing their own produce to cook and eat.
We would also create our own ‘cook-along’ and ‘how to’ films where pupils and adults can work together to create a bank of films that the school and the wider community can use for inspiration and learning.

There are more than 30 children in the gardening club who would work initially with our community volunteers. All classes (905 pupils) would have access to the gardens/ growing areas.

Christmas Fair

The Christmas Fair was a great success. Eilidh M had the brainwave of giving every class a Christmas tree to decorate and then we old the decorated tree at the Fair.

We sourced lovely trees from a reputable garden centre and bought pots to put them in. Thank you very much to Mr Madden who very generously funded the project. What wasn’t old at the Fair, was sold at the Nativities the following week by our budding entrepreneurs.

We also made lovely Christmas kitchen planters from rosemary plants and recycled tin cans. We researched some yummy rosemary recipes and old these together. They sold out very quickly.

We applied lots of the knowledge and skills we have been learning in class – budgeting, marketing, sales, research, as well as continuing to develop our gardening know how.

We also developed confidence, patience, problem solving, teamwork and creativity.

The profit we made will go towards the replacement of the equipment, plants, tools and greenhouse which were destroyed by vandals.

OLM in Bulbs

The team worked very hard to plant the letters OLM in blue and yellow ‘grande maitre’ crocuses just outside the main entrance.

We applied our maths skills to the real-life problem of measuring out the area and calculating just how many bulbs we would need for the task. We then went online to source the bulbs at a fair price. Once the bulbs arrived, we again used our maths skills to divide the bulbs according to the area of each letter.

We had to apply our knowledge of measure, cost and ratio to ensure the bulbs were evenly distributed. We then had fun planting the bulbs. Hopefully, they will flower this year and many years to come.

Thanks to the PSA for funding our maths/ gardening project.

We had a visit from Angela Smith from the Royal Horticultural Society to the Guardians of the Garden. We were tidying the outdoor space and planting the beds with salads, kale, onions, elephant garlic and edible flowers which we are going to put to good use later on in the year. And a massive thank you to Angela for sharing your seeds, plants and tips with us.

After school Angela held a workshop for teachers at OLM and other teachers from different cluster schools joined us.
