SESLA AWARD

On Wednesday 23rd March, a Water and Sanitation engineer came to visit P6. At the start, Mr Deverill introduced himself to us. After that he told us that he worked in some of the poorest parts of the world like Africa and Madagascar. He also told us that lots girls and some boys don’t get to go to school because they need to get water for their family. The laughs came in when he told us he worked with poo! After that we did a few activities where we were learning about personal hygiene. He taught us about how diseases can be spread and we were asked to remember the 5 F’s: Food, Fingers, Feet, Fields and Flies. We had so much fun listening and talking to him!

Mr Deverill’s visit gave us inspiration for our SESLA Awards. This week we have been designing our own  designs and writing a persuasive letter to  final year Engineering students at the University of Strathclyde. We hope some of us will be successful with our inventions!

Entrance of the engineer

112_1410On Friday the 18th of March the Primary 6’s had a visitor who was an engineer called Mr Blanco. He is a civil engineer who works for Amey and in particular he usually works on the highway . He helped us think of ideas for the SESLA contest and we are very inspired. We learned lots about him and his career and it was very interesting. We also asked questions to Mr Blanco and he answered them in detail. At the end we said a massive thank you to Mr Blanco for coming to our school.

Brilliant Book Week

On the week of the 7th March we celebrated books and reading by having Brilliant Book Week. We did a whole different range of exciting activities during this week including PATTER time (Pupils And Teachers Together Everyone Reading) and on Friday dressing up as  characters from our favourite books. Some examples of our class are Hot Shot Hamish, Gansta Granny, The Boy in the Dress, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and Thing 1 and Thing 2. Here is a picture of P6c in their costumes!112_1328

All of the classes designed covers and spines for their favourite book. In every class their was a winner for the best front cover and spine. Then these winners got judged by the librarians for a the best one in each stage. Everyone had lots of fun.

Here are some quotes about Brilliant book week:

‘It was fun to dress up as a character!’- Rhuriadh

‘I really liked PATTER time.’- Eve

‘ I enjoyed designing my book cover.’- Rebecca

‘I thought it was amazing fun because we got to dress up!’ – Jenna

Super smoothies

Last week P6 made smoothies for the Primary 1 pupils. We were trying to raise awareness of Fairtrade products so that the Primary 1 pupils knew more about them. For example, if they were to go shopping with their family then they would spot the Fairtrade logo. We created our own recipes for smoothies  and we had a lot of fun!

We also designed posters for the P1 pupils to show them all the ingredients we had used and to learn about some fun facts on Fairtrade. We enjoyed making the posters and getting to work in our groups. We had 10 different groups. Some of the groups were: Berry blitz, Chuck em all in, Fairtrade Berry Blast, On the beach, The Strawberry and Banana Mash up and many more.

When we got to taste the lovely smoothies we were quite surprised because they were tastier than we thought!

Perfect Portraits

Earlier on in the week, we had our photos taken, that were then printed out, cut in half and stuck on pieces of card. We then redrew the half that was cut off, following the steps on the board. Finally, we added tone by smudging the pencil in darker places of the face. The competition is a nationwide contest for kids to encourage the next generation to take up art. The winning entries will be displayed in a gallery, as well as receiving lots of art vouchers. In the real art pieces we will enter, we will draw the entire face. Everyone really enjoyed the exercise.

“Luckily, it was fairly easy because we only had to draw half of the face”- Angus Birnie

“I enjoyed drawing this portrait, although I found it hard to keep it symmetrical”- Amy Watson

Fundraising for the SSPCA

101_0565

Over the winter holidays, we decided to raise money for the SSPCA because they help lots of animals. Originally, we gave out Hama Bead creations in return for a reasonable donation. Unfortunately, we realised not many people were interested. We thought we would try home baking, and we made chocolate chip cookies, and vanilla cupcakes to sell round our neighbourhood. We sold each cookie at 50p each, and each cupcake at £1 each. We raised a grand total of £25 in one afternoon! Once we counted up our money, we sent it off to the SSPCA along with a letter from us. Sharon Meiklejohn, a Senior Community Fundraiser, replied to it, and sent us each certificates too.

P6 and The Chocolate Trade Game

Yesterday, P6a played the Chocolate Trade Game.  The point was to teach us how Fairtrade ensures that everyone involved gets their fair share. We were all given a pack for each of the different jobs. This included independent cocoa farmers, Fairtrade cocoa farmers, the Big Chocolate Company, and Fairtrade Chocolate Company. There were also shoppers and supermarkets. The cocoa farmers had to draw and cut out Fairtrade cocoa beans and non-Fairtrade cocoa beans. They were then sold to the chocolate companies so they could make chocolate to sell to supermarkets, which would then be bought by shoppers (consumers). But there were new rules as we advanced through the 4 seasons. Things were good for certain companies, and bad for others. At one point all the farmers were affected by a black pod disease and they lost half of their crops! Us journalists got a few quotes from different groups. “I feel devastated and emotional that we can’t feed our families well!” –Alice, (independent cocoa farmer) “I’m extremely agitated!” –Beth, (Fairtrade farmer) At the end, the Fairtrade farmers and the Fairtrade Chocolate Company made a profit about five times the amount of the non-Fairtrade! This was a really fun activity, a great way to learn about Fairtrade!

Dashing Disco!!!!!

On Tuesday 26th January Netherlee Primary School had an outstanding winter disco for the Primary 6 and 7 pupils. This disco was very fun because there was an epic DJ and he played good songs and fun games!!! It was fabulous because we got to spend more time with our friends and we also got to meet new people and play with them. We all enjoyed the disco because everyone was friendly and all the helpers that worked there included everyone.
