Brilliant Book Week

On the week of the 7th March we celebrated books and reading by having Brilliant Book Week. We did a whole different range of exciting activities during this week including PATTER time (Pupils And Teachers Together Everyone Reading) and on Friday dressing up as  characters from our favourite books. Some examples of our class are Hot Shot Hamish, Gansta Granny, The Boy in the Dress, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum and Thing 1 and Thing 2. Here is a picture of P6c in their costumes!112_1328

All of the classes designed covers and spines for their favourite book. In every class their was a winner for the best front cover and spine. Then these winners got judged by the librarians for a the best one in each stage. Everyone had lots of fun.

Here are some quotes about Brilliant book week:

‘It was fun to dress up as a character!’- Rhuriadh

‘I really liked PATTER time.’- Eve

‘ I enjoyed designing my book cover.’- Rebecca

‘I thought it was amazing fun because we got to dress up!’ – Jenna

‘It was good fun designing front covers.’ – Zak

‘It was very exciting and I hope we do  it again.’ – Innes

Super smoothies

Last week P6 made smoothies for the Primary 1 pupils. We were trying to raise awareness of Fairtrade products so that the Primary 1 pupils knew more about them. For example, if they were to go shopping with their family then they would spot the Fairtrade logo. We created our own recipes for smoothies  and we had a lot of fun!

We also designed posters for the P1 pupils to show them all the ingredients we had used and to learn about some fun facts on Fairtrade. We enjoyed making the posters and getting to work in our groups. We had 10 different groups. Some of the groups were: Berry blitz, Chuck em all in, Fairtrade Berry Blast, On the beach, The Strawberry and Banana Mash up and many more.

When we got to taste the lovely smoothies we were quite surprised because they were tastier than we thought!

Perfect Portraits

Earlier on in the week, we had our photos taken, that were then printed out, cut in half and stuck on pieces of card. We then redrew the half that was cut off, following the steps on the board. Finally, we added tone by smudging the pencil in darker places of the face. The competition is a nationwide contest for kids to encourage the next generation to take up art. The winning entries will be displayed in a gallery, as well as receiving lots of art vouchers. In the real art pieces we will enter, we will draw the entire face. Everyone really enjoyed the exercise.

“Luckily, it was fairly easy because we only had to draw half of the face”- Angus Birnie

“I enjoyed drawing this portrait, although I found it hard to keep it symmetrical”- Amy Watson

Dashing Disco!!!!!

On Tuesday 26th January Netherlee Primary School had an outstanding winter disco for the Primary 6 and 7 pupils. This disco was very fun because there was an epic DJ and he played good songs and fun games!!! It was fabulous because we got to spend more time with our friends and we also got to meet new people and play with them. We all enjoyed the disco because everyone was friendly and all the helpers that worked there included everyone.

Winter Wonderland Trees

Recently, Primary 6c have been learning about art techniques. We drew our own unique winter trees. To do this we went outside into the P 2 – 5 playground to get inspiration from natural winter trees.  The stationary we used  were the following: sharp pencils, charcoal and blue a4 paper. We had to try and draw exactly what we saw. It was important that the tree branches became slimmer the higher up the tree.

Next, we added white paint onto the tips of our branches. To do this we had to be very delicate with our paintbrush strokes. After that we sprayed some paint on to make a snowy effect. Finally we added some pink and green glitter for the finishing touches. Overall we really enjoyed this task!

Watching Tim Peake’s rocket launch!

 112_1013           112_1007

On Tuesday  15th  December Primary 6 watched Tim Peake’s rocket lift off. When they were ready to blast off to the ISS it was really nerve wracking because we were terrified that something was going to go wrong. Luckily the journey was extremely successful as they have reached there destination.

We enjoyed watching the clip of the lift off, as it was very fun to watch. He is the first male British person to go to the ISS so it is an important occassion. We can’t wait till we get the result of our rocket seeds, and we also can’t wait till Tim Peake arrives back in the UK.

The Spectacular Sock Snowman Stall!

IMG_0563 (2)On Tuesday 8th December, Netherlee Primary School held a Christmas Fayre. P6c held a stall selling snowmen made out of socks. We called the stall “The Spectacular Sock Snowman Stall”. We were raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. In total we raised an amazing £85!

They sold out extremely quickly because everyone thought they were adorable. We split the snowmen into three groups. The first one was the small one, then there was the medium and last there was the large. The small one were £2.00, medium £2.50 and the large £3.00.

This is the link on how to make the sock snowmen.

Drama

Today, we acted out an improvised  drama scene about a rocket launch! First we took part in a 10 second shape warm up game. Miss Bell asked us to create a shape of an object as a group. It was so exciting! For the main activity, we were each learning in different roles. For example: astronaut, doctor, meteorologist and mission control commentator.  It was loads of fun being able to improvise and act in character because we got to use our voices and bodies dramatically!  We were very happy with the results and had loads of fun!

5…4…3…2…1… BLAST OFF!

117_1078On Thursday 19th November Primary 6c made rockets. All week, we have been discussing Tim Peake’s mission to the International Space Station. So in groups of three we designed rockets to launch outside. We created interesting designs including four fins and a nose cone. To make the rockets launch, we mixed 1 Alka-Seltzer tablet and 4 table spoons of water in a film canister. Then we went outside and launched one of the rockets. The rockets went so high; it went over the nursery! This reaction happened because the carbon dioxide realised from the tablet created a lot of pressure in the canister. Then the force of thrust was greater than the force of gravity and air resistance. Next week, we will all be launching our own rockets.
