K-NEX Challenge

Usually at this time of year there is a K-Nex challenge for Primary 6 to coincide with our STEAM week and the winners of the challenge go forward to cluster and regional events. However with this being cancelled we decided to do it anyway in house!

– The show must go on!!   For now anyway!! 🙂

What amazing cheerful children at school today – resilient and eager to be with friends and have a fun challenge.

The Challenge was – To create an aircraft of their own – could have been imaginative or just what we would see in our skies – helicopter, plane etc.

An exciting challenge of creating a flying machine.

Here are some comments from the children…and of course some fab pictures!

We made a helicopter but from a different universe with great imagination! It was called the PPAS Peppa Pig Airline Service 🙂

We did very well as working as  a team and at the end we won a  prize for excellent team work. (Tom and Rowan)

I enjoyed working with my friends from the other class, that was fun! We built a plane called the Special Plane 2000 (SP200) It is like a flying carriage and it was quite hard to make the base but we got there in the end! We came joint first for great teamwork and got a chocolate! Everyone of our team chose a Wispa but Tabitha chose a Crunchie!

THE K-nex challenge was challenging today however our team won!! It was really fun and entertaining and we found it fun to work together.  Ours was a helicopter called the Awesomecopter and it had 6 moving parts with a cockpit and steering wheel. We were quite shocked and didn’t realise there was a competition and we were surprised when we found out that we had won. None of us expected it. (Ruaridh and Abhijay)

Here are some more examples of of the amazing creations and teamwork!

Well done everyone!!

STEAM fortnight

Primary 6 have been very busy with STEAM activities and visitors  due to our STEAM fortnight. Here are a few of the photographs from our activities so far….

Mr Hull came in to give us a chance to use some of the technology equipment that we have in the cluster. We had the chance to build our own Bloxel characters using cubes then wen on the iPad to create the character digitally and put it into a game to play. It was fun!

We loved trying to keep the Sphero balls inside the route! That was quite impossible!

Craig trying his best!!

VR Headsets too!

In class…. – What is a chemical reaction?

Thanks to Mr (Rev.) Eve who came in and talked to us about some great inventors of the past.

Mr (Rev) Eve and his star- gazing binoculars!

Thank you to all who took part in the Family Science Homework !

Great effort by all and the children gave wonderful presentations about their inventions. Here are some examples of the great work.

Madeline presenting her Water Saver invention.

Louisa’s ‘Auto Light’ invention.
Craig’s Compost Powered Car.
Ruaridh’s ‘Eco Litter Bag’ design.
Rowan and sister Grace presented their Mrs Bin together even with rewards if you put litter in the bin!

Congratulations to Nicole and Sanna who came 2nd place in the App Design competition we did a couple of weeks ago for P4-7 and won some brilliant prizes!!! Well done!!

We have been looking at abstract art and learning what it is through looking at other artists and their styles.

We have been creating our own background abstract art using our own styles and ideas and very soon will be adding to the foreground something we choose that is to do with space in the style of the artist Peter Thorpe. We have been enjoying creating our own individual artistic styles of abstract art.

Science: Black Holes

Today we had a science lesson which was fun and challenging! It was all about Black holes. I found it only a little bit tricky to understand but I think I understood it pretty well.

We learned how a black hole was formed and what the black hole does and why it does what it does. I learned a bit about the Space-time continuum and gravitational pull and mass. When something collides with a black hole it gets bigger as it absorbs it’s mass. (Francis)

Volunteers showing gravity – what comes up must come down.
Investigation to see what happens when a star collapses.

This last picture shows a star that has the usual gas around it (foil) and then collapses once it has run out of fuel.

This star has gas around it (foil)

A star imploding and then the gas reducing all around it….  (Francis)

Our school values award this month went to Eilidh who got it for being truthful and honest when it really matters.

Euroquiz contestants did amazingly well at the quiz and came 5th!! Well done!!

February

Primary 6 have been busy bees in February so far!

In gymnastics we have been testing our upper body strength on the bars and balancing along a very thin bench whilst moving our legs in a co-ordinated way. We had to remember to use our arms to help with the balancing!

“I enjoyed trying to get my upper body strength stronger on the bars, it was quite tricky to stay upright! I find balancing quite easy and I’m proud of that as I didn’t need any support.” Sanna

“I found the partner balances really fun because it was funny as we  kept falling but it made us work as a team and we managed to do it in the end.” Megan

Valentine creative craft was fun!

“I enjoyed making my parents a Valentines card.” Megan

A very fun introduction to Jamboard on Googleclassroom … with the digital leaders helping us all.

“I enjoyed the Jamboard because you can doodle and put pictures on it and other people can see what we have done.”

“I like the Jamboard as its fun to type up our thoughts or what we know or don’t know and what we’ve learned. It was fun to see it on Mrs Thomas’ board in class as we could see what everyone else wrote too.”  Eve

A very proud Tom after cooking his courgette and tagliatelle at skills academy! Yum!!

“My favourite part was chopping up the courgette!” Tom

January Blog

January has been fast and furious in school!

Brilliant gymnastics efforts using apparatus and balances, travelling steps and various shapes.

Fabulous!!

We had a great Drama Workshop by Vision Perform. Here are some photos of our Freeze Frames…can you guess what’s happening?

Scots Literature week – we played Simon says in Scots, read extracts from the GFG (BFG) and translated it to English….that was tricky in places as a lot of the BFG words are his own language so that boggled our minds a little!

We created and designed our own digital design of tartan…..Tartan Tartan Digital Creations

If you click on the above you should see them all.

We also read the Children’s rights articles and rewrote them fro our Class Charter wall so that we have them in Scots now (some of them) and English!

We also had great fun reciting Scots poems with some of our parents and sadly the file is too big to share on here but just know that it was very funny!! We had great fun changing our accents and making others laugh!

Last Week before Christmas

The children have worked so hard this term and it has really flown by. I wish to say how proud I am of all their efforts in all areas. It is very difficult to narrow it down to a few highlights but a few to name are their writing work,  their kindness to others and the trip to Sky Studios which really highlighted how talented our class is and how hard working they can all be. They represented our school impeccably.

There has also been many children raising money for charities this term. Cancer Research, Guide Dogs for the Blind, MND Scotland are the charities that received money. A huge well done to them as it is so important to remember to give a little, especially at this time of year. Mrs Thomas.

Isla Walker will leave us this week to travel to Australia to begin a new life there and we wish her the best of luck on her new adventure.

Highlights of my last week at Busby have been that I have really enjoyed making Christmas cards and I chose to make one that has baubles on the front and is sparkly with glitter. I really liked doing the Winter poem. My poem was called the snow and it was an acrostic poem. The party was really fun on Monday afternoon! The best bit about the party was doing the best dancer and dancing away to lots of songs.

I have had a really good time here at Busby and I’m quite excited about going to Australia but I will miss my Busby friends.  Hope to stay in touch with some of you. xx Isla xx

This term I had something awful happen, I broke my foot! It happened in the playground and it was really painful but I cam e back to school fairly quickly so that I could see my friends and still work hard. Mrs Thomas gave me a values award for returning to school despite still being in pain and working so hard when I got back.  I have really loved being in my group for our Ocean Planet topic. I really enjoyed working with my team, I got the opportunity to be a leader and I sometimes enjoyed it but found it a bit tricky at times. I cant wait for Christmas! Tabitha x

Highlights of this week…..

Christmas is coming fast….

This week I have enjoyed doing Flexible Friday and doing the Advent calendar each day which tells us a new story about something to do with Christmas – a fact! I liked going to the P7 shop this week which was called Virgin Money. I bought 2 snowmen which are stress relievers filled with rice…I have now adopted them!  Louisa

I have enjoyed making our IDL plastic pollution solution machine – Its called Dolly the Dolphin!  Dolly is going to be sent into our oceans and it sucks in plastic and when it runs out of room inside there is a sticky material on the outside that can continue sticking plastic on to it. It repels sea life.  I also liked creating the little friendship booklet. Megan.

I have enjoyed designing my own Christmas card and tree hanging decoration and I’m looking forward to making them next week. I have liked doing maths and my group were doing multiplying by 10 and dividing by 10 using the place value chart. I liked completing my friendship booklet which made me think about how I should always treat them well and how much they mean to me. Jessica.

Sky Academy Studios

On Thursday this week we were very lucky to be able to visit Sky Academy Studios in Livingston.

The children were amazing and did Busby Primary proud in creating a wonderful News Report.

“When I walked in and saw the professional cameras, I was so amazed and thankful that I got the chance to use one of these cool cameras. I’ve had experience with other cameras so I know how to zoom in and out and it was so fun using this huge real TV camera. When I saw the big blue whale and heard that the amount of plastic it took to make it was the amount of plastic bottles used every second that are not recycled, I was shocked.”   Alfie

Polly the Blue Whale

We arrived on the bus and had lunch straight away. Then we went into a room that was like a cinema where we watched a film about Sky and all that they do.

“We then went into our groups and into our own studios. We all had a job to do. My job was the reporter and I had to talk in front of the camera, talking about plastic pollution in our oceans. I had to get changed into a suit and looked very smart to play the part. Behind me was a green screen which they put a beach with lots of plastic in the background. We researched more facts and spoke about them for the camera and the news report. My favourite bit of all was seeing the whole film put together by all the groups at the very end, We created an amazing news report. It was really fun!” Craig

Reporting with the green screen

” I was really surprised when I saw the Blue Whale outside that I later found out that it was called Polly and then after that, I found out that Polly has a brother called Plasticus in London!

So when we came in, we had our lunch immediately and then we all went outside for some fresh air.  My favourite bit of all was when we had to make the decision between two of our videos. We chose the second one because the first one, a member of our team someone got a bit muddled with their words but the second one was better. It was a great day!” Caleb

Fabulous opportunity for the children and they all rose to the challenge! Watch out for some young and up and coming journalists and reporters!!

Skills Academy

Our Community Skills Academy had the Williamwood Fire Service out to talk about their role in the community. They gave us a great talk about all the skills and training they needed to enter the job and what skills they use day to day and how this impacts on the community.  Next we had a full tour of the Fire truck. What a brilliant job our Fire Service does day to day.

We learned that it is everybody’s responsibility to keep the equipment looked after and ensure it is checked every day before work,in order that everything is there and works properly.

Thanks to the Williamwood Fire Service for visiting us at Busby Primary!

Health and Well-being Week

Mindful Monday began with a lesson on how to stay safe when working or playing on a computer or any internet device. The children then had a very relaxing Yoga session with Mrs Farrant in the gym hall which was enjoyed by all.

E-Safety SMART

We then discussed what is a worry and shared some worries with each other. The children learned a strategy to help when they are worrying about something.

The 3 C’s

CATCH  thoughts     Catch the negative thoughts,  e.g.  No one at                                                                   school likes me

COLLECT   evidence   – Find the evidence that supports this (Often                                                                     there is none.  Feelings are not facts!)

CHALLENGE  thoughts  –  Have a debate with yourself about the fact                                                                    that your thought is not true.

Teamwork Tuesday was

Workout Wednesday starting off with a blast of high intensity exercise with INSANITY….what a way to start the week. Lots of sweat and hard work to increase heart rates. Fantastic effort by all the children.

Mr Butterfield and the class!

Before the sweating!! 🙂

and during…..

Some classroom fitness…

Just Dance
Yoga

Great flexibility in Yoga!

Thankful Thursday…lots of things to be thankful for…

Our Class Gratitude Tree

Everyone contributed to the collage art to create the tree and thought of one thing they are truly thankful for.

Some mindfulness colouring  and strategies learned to remember to take time to calm and focus on ourselves and also what to do to help us when we worry about things.

Friendship Friday….reflection on what we do with our friends, who are our friends, how to be a good friend and how to keep friends.

A great Health and Well-Being Week!
