Week Beginning 10/5

This week in literacy we have:

  • Learned more about the magic e sound. Here is a link to a video all about the magic e.  We discovered the power of the magic e to make weak vowels strong! Here is a video telling you more about that.

This week in numeracy we have learned about:

  • The greater gator
  • Numbers before/after
  • Smallest, smaller / bigger, biggest numbers

We also decided to change the use of our mark-making area into a ‘junk modelling / STEM area’ which Miss Harrison will keep adding materials to. If you have any ‘junk’ at home that you think would be good for our junk modelling area then please bring them in and they can be quarantined and then put out for the children to use. This could be papers, boxes, cartons, elastic bands, tubes, springs or card, etc…

Junk modelling a house with a swimming pool.
Junk modelling and using different loose parts/annotations to improve our creations.
Using the leap-pads to play ‘greater gator’ games.
Creating using a range of construction materials.
Playing and creating with friends.

This week we are still learning through our theme of farming and growing. During this short week, we have focussed on the role farmers and food producers have in growing and harvesting food. We did sensory writing pieces using our five senses to explore what we might see, smell, hear, touch, and taste on a farm.

On Monday we do some ‘sound searching’ where we search for sounds we have been learning in books. This allows us to improve our reading skills and also consolidate our understanding of learned sounds. We enjoy using a range of materials to make words.
Making patterns through play. Learners are free to access a wide range of play resources.
Making patterns.
Farm tuff tray. P1.2 really enjoyed playing with this sensory tuff tray. They explored stories and developed their fine motor skills.
A provocation exploring estimation. We are just beginning to explore this skill.
Learners using our farmyard tuff tray.
More phonics work using letter blocks.

Life on the Farm in P1.2

Lots of Primary 1.2 expressed an interest in animals, farms and springtime. We have enjoyed lots of activities this week linking to these themes. We used the book ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson to help direct our learning. Listen to the story here.

We have really enjoyed our outdoor time this week. We are building up our stamina on the Daily Mile.

A robot by Ali.
Loose parts play/messy play. Acting out ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ story.
Loose parts play. This is ‘Paris’ and the structure is the Eiffel tower. The food was taken from the farm shop role play corner and the chef was cooking a French meal.
‘What the Ladybird Heard’ Tuff Spot. The learners really enjoyed this. We added tractors, dump trucks, and characters from the story.
Farm Shop role play corner. Lots of creative role play this week in the Farm Shop. We even added real fruit and vegetables! Practising using money with the till and writing down orders.
Telling animal stories using our puppet theatre.

After reading ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ we created our own farm maps for Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh to help them steal our own prize animal. We learned all about what makes a ‘fine prize cow’ and also did some listening and talking activities about different farm animals. We then used our maps to create instructions for Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh to help navigate them through the farm. Our focus was instructional writing with the use of bossy verbs and numbers to give our instructions an order. Look at our wonderful creations!

Spelling our sounds for this week using Pom Poms

Messy play, explorative play or outdoor play, it doesn’t matter, we love playing in P1.2!

Our tuff spot was transformed into a rock pool where we can use the rocks, shells and other materials to explore and play.
