February 2024

Welcome to February’s Blog!

The Yellow Group have had a very busy month exploring Stem during nurture time. We also tasted some new food at this years Chinese New Year  celebration as you can see the food went down a treat.

Christmas seems such a long time ago; however, we have added some December pictures.

Miss Miller has been showing the Yellow group some exercises and putting them through their paces.  We had a nice cool-down afterwards, which was well needed.

One of our favourite action songs is the “Jumping Bean” song.  We have changed it up a bit, as the children wanted to practice their hopping skills. We now have hopping and jumping beans !

Toothbrushing

We all have our own toothbrushes in the nursery, which the children love.  We are getting so good at cleaning our teeth.

Our post box for our snack names really needed updating, so we decorated a new one with drawings of our favourite snacks.  It looks amazing!

See you next month for more yellow adventures.

Love,

Mrs Mclean and Miss Miller.

November 2023

Welcome to the November blog.

This month we have taken a snap shot of the children over a couple of afternoons showing where they enjoy “playing”. This is known as “leading their own learning”!

Through play, children experiment and explore, learning new skills such as problem solving and team working skills.  All this play develops their cognitive, social, emotional and physical capacities.

A typical day in the life of your child
(when they tell you they did nothing at nursery they are not being 100% honest 😊)
Mark making using car wheels.
Having a picnic with the junk modelling.
Mark making in the soil, dried leaves and twigs.
Problem solving – how do I get my dinosaur out of here?
Collaboratively working together to create a large structure.
Imaginative play – Hiding from the “baddies”.
Pre-writing skills – Working those small muscles in our fingers to make them strong.
Learning life skills while making soup.
Exploring colour mixing.
Showing responsibility by returning the hi-vis vest.

Lots of concentration and hand-eye coordination skills as we thread beads.
Observational drawing.
Being independent – Getting ready to go outside.
Sharing resources. The were enjoying drawing and having a chat 🙂

Autumn Challenge Bags

Thank you for all the amazing leaf puppets and autumnal pictures  the children created and brought into nursery.  We have proudly displayed these on our reading tree in the literacy area where they can be seen by everyone.

Christmas Market 🎄

We have been busy little elves creating some crafts for our Christmas market … Unfortunately, we can’t show you anymore as it would ruin the surprise. 😉

We look forward to showing you more things we get up to in our December blog.

Sunny September 2023

Hello and welcome to sunny September — much sunnier than we expected!  All the yellow group children are settling in well, finding their favourite areas and beginning to understand and follow our daily routines.

We’ve been delving into the artist Jackson Pollock’s work. This “spark” of learning came from the children’s interests in the creative area and was extended outside, where we were able to explore it on a much larger scale.

We learned that Jackson Pollock used sticks to paint on a canvas placed on the floor.  The children used wonderful descriptive language; flicking, dripping, pouring, swirling, patting, scratched, flicked, dribbled and even tickled the canvas. While outside we even made our own mud paint. It was very messy, but lots of fun!

“We need lots of mud in it”

“I’m scratching it”

“I put green on it”
“I’m going to make a magic wand, can I take it home?”

We even painted the sticks to make rainbow wands😊  🌈.

The children have been enjoying the story “The Ravenous Beast”.  After reading the story, we brought out the story stones.  Following some group discussion, we attempted to put the characters in the correct order as they appeared in the story.

A fantastic impression of the ………… lion 😂

Tooth brushing

We have been learning about why it is so important to take care of our teeth and have been working on our tooth brushing skills each day😁.

Stay and Play

It was lovely to see so many parents and carers at the stay and play sessions; the children were so happy and excited to show everyone around the nursery. If you were not able to make it, don’t worry; there will be more opportunities to come in and visit. Here are a few snap shots:

So much learning is happening everyday in nursery, we wish we could show you it all!  We hope you have had a super September weekend and we’ll see you in October!🎃👻🦇

May 2023

Welcome to May’s blog!

Sports Day🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏅

We had a fabulous sports day along with fabulous weather!  The children were all amazing showing us everything they had been practising in the gym hall – balancing on a beam, high knees, skipping, egg and spoon and fast running to name a few.  It was lovely to see so many of you there too.  Next year we’re working on getting a grown up race in there so get your trainers ready 😉.

In the lead up to Sports Day all the children participated in getting our flag ready.  We started off designing our own flags and then discussed how we wanted our group one to look.  We ended up with a very yellow, sparkly flag with hand prints, self portraits and ribbons.  I’m sure you’ll agree the yellow team looked awesome as they walked up the hill.

Coronation of King Charles III 👑

To celebrate the Coronation the children had to opportunity to explore various activities across the nursery.  They demonstrated their creative side while designing different styles of crown.  Castles and palaces were built collaboratively in the construction area, followed by role playing as kings, queens and princesses.

“i’m sitting on the throne”

“it’s raining coins”

Gloop

Having fun getting messy while experimenting with gloop.  Mixing cornflour (2 parts) and water (1 part) makes a fabulous sensory and science activity to learn about the concepts of what a solid and liquid is.  Using pipettes, the children added coloured water to the cornflower until they had the correct consistency.

The gloop acts and feels like a liquid as it drips from fingers or if it’s left to rest, but when you squeeze it together and add pressure the mixture feels solid.

“you can write your name in it”

“i’ve got the water in it, I squeezed it and it went in”

“wow, it’s hard”

Dancing Raisins Experiment🎵🧪🥼

Continuing with the children’s interest in experiments, we explored what would happen if we added raisins to water and lemonade.  Taking turns they all added their raisins to both liquids.

The raisins just sank to the bottom of the water but in the lemonade they kept floating to the top, sinking and then floating back up again.

We discovered that the bubbles are filled with carbon dioxide which cling on to the wrinkly raisins making them buoyant and float or  dance to the top.  The bubbles then burst making the raisins sink to the bottom where more bubbles jump on them again.  This was great fun to watch and the children were so engaged throughout 🥰.

“they bumped heads!” – L

“there’s so many at the party!” – C

“bubbles at the top” – R

See you in June where the countdown to the summer holidays and P1 begins 😲 !!!

APRIL 2023

Welcome to the April blog and we hope you’ve have a relaxing Easter break – can’t believe we are now in term 3 already! 🤨

The children settled back into nursery life as soon as they were through the playroom door.  It was lovely to see them waiting patiently for their friends to arrive and reconnecting with each other after the holiday.  We had lots of excited and wonderful conversations about their Easter egg hunts and how many eggs they found.

Tadpoles 🐸

During our nurture time, we went to check on our frogspawn to see if they had turned into tadpoles over the holidays.  We were amazed to see how many we had – there were loads of them!  The children checked our diagram of a frogspawn life cycle and found out that they would soon be growing legs and becoming young frogs called froglets.

A couple of the tadpoles were given names, “James” and “Rainbow One”

“There’s a bug swimming in there too”

“look, they’re kissing the plants” (followed by lots of laughing)

Experiments 🥼🧪

Fuelling their curiosity and inquisitive minds, we have been exploring some simple science experiments.  So far we have investigated what happens when you add water to skittles and Mentos to fizzy coke.

Rainbow Skittles 🌈

We placed a circle of Skittles on two separate plates adding cold and hot water to make rainbow patterns.   The children used tally marks to vote their prediction of which one would make the best pattern.  We’ll let you try this at home to find out the answer 😉

“It smells so good”
“I think the cold one the cold water one is catching up”
“look it’s a rainbow”
“When the colour goes it’s just a lump of sugar”

Coke and Mentos 🥤🍬🌋

We had a small bottle and a large bottle of fizzy coke and again the children predicted what they thought would happen when we added the Mentos to each bottle.   The small bottle of coke didn’t fizz up very much after putting a few Mentos in so the children decided to put all the remaining ones in the big bottle.  We had to act quick as we could see the coke fizzing before we all got our Mentos in!

“It went on my arm!”

See you in May when we’ll update you on James and Rainbow One 😊
