Welcome to May’s blog!

Sports Day🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏅

We had a fabulous sports day along with fabulous weather!  The children were all amazing showing us everything they had been practising in the gym hall – balancing on a beam, high knees, skipping, egg and spoon and fast running to name a few.  It was lovely to see so many of you there too.  Next year we’re working on getting a grown up race in there so get your trainers ready 😉.

In the lead up to Sports Day all the children participated in getting our flag ready.  We started off designing our own flags and then discussed how we wanted our group one to look.  We ended up with a very yellow, sparkly flag with hand prints, self portraits and ribbons.  I’m sure you’ll agree the yellow team looked awesome as they walked up the hill.

Coronation of King Charles III 👑

To celebrate the Coronation the children had to opportunity to explore various activities across the nursery.  They demonstrated their creative side while designing different styles of crown.  Castles and palaces were built collaboratively in the construction area, followed by role playing as kings, queens and princesses.

“i’m sitting on the throne”
“it’s raining coins”

Gloop

Having fun getting messy while experimenting with gloop.  Mixing cornflour (2 parts) and water (1 part) makes a fabulous sensory and science activity to learn about the concepts of what a solid and liquid is.  Using pipettes, the children added coloured water to the cornflower until they had the correct consistency.

The gloop acts and feels like a liquid as it drips from fingers or if it’s left to rest, but when you squeeze it together and add pressure the mixture feels solid.

“you can write your name in it”
“i’ve got the water in it, I squeezed it and it went in”
“wow, it’s hard”

Dancing Raisins Experiment🎵🧪🥼

Continuing with the children’s interest in experiments, we explored what would happen if we added raisins to water and lemonade.  Taking turns they all added their raisins to both liquids.

The raisins just sank to the bottom of the water but in the lemonade they kept floating to the top, sinking and then floating back up again.

We discovered that the bubbles are filled with carbon dioxide which cling on to the wrinkly raisins making them buoyant and float or  dance to the top.  The bubbles then burst making the raisins sink to the bottom where more bubbles jump on them again.  This was great fun to watch and the children were so engaged throughout 🥰.

See you in June where the countdown to the summer holidays and P1 begins 😲 !!!
