Phonics at Home and School

Every child has been given sound cards to use at home.  These cards can be cut up. Try to ask your child for the sound of the letter. When they are confident, you can then put three letters together to make words for them to sound out.  You can also use the whiteboard to write the words.  When reading stories, see if your child can recognise sounds or three letter words.

We are learning to use these sounds and words in class in lots of different activities.

Numeracy is fun!

Some of us have been looking at numbers before and after and looking at the quantity of numbers. Some of us have been learning to use a number line and have started to add on 1.

Every day, we practise our days of the week song and then we have to say which days come before and after. It can be quite tricky.  We also sing our Months of the Year song and put our hands up when it is our birthday month.   As if that isn’t enough, we sing our money song about 1p, 2p, 5 p and 10p.  Oh- and then we look at numbers to 20 on “Splat”.  We are definitely learning through play, but we also work very hard!

Numbers

It’s Maths Week at Mearns Primary and we have been busy in 1.3 counting, practicing our days of the week and months of the year.  We also make numbers – we are becoming experts at it.

Today we went for a number walk to see how many things in groups we could find.   There was great discussion and lots of laughing.
