We celebrated the life and work of Robert Burns , looking at Burns Cottage and discussing his life. We watched a modern day version of “Tam O’Shanter.”
We had our own ” Burns Supper”, starting with “The Selkirk Grace” and then we ate oatcakes and cheese and shortbread and we drank ” Ribena”. At the end we sang ” Auld Lang Syne”.
We have some new activities in 1.4 this week. There have been lots of construction discussion in the Duplo pit; Blast off continuously happens in the Space Station; there has been lots of concentration at the hammer beads and the dressing up box has provided lots of role play and much hilarity.
We learn so much in 1.4. We learn a lot through play, but we also learn by working with our teachers. We are learning to put our phonics to good use and can now read and write. We are starting to extend our writing by writing more than one sentence. We are trying so hard.
We have been learning Scottish Country Dancing in the Street on a Friday. We have been learning an eightsome reel. ( We are experts at counting to eight!) We are the best P1 dancers that Mrs Arbuckle has ever seen. We have excellent coordination.
It snowed. You may have noticed. Then it snowed again. Our playground very quickly filled up with lots of snow. Miss Hunter set all the boys and girls a challenge: to build the best snowman! We put all of our winter clothes and boots on and out we went. Yes, it was cold; yes, we dropped our timetable and yes, we had a lot of fun! We used teamwork to build our brilliant pirate snowman.
“What could we add to our room?” We asked the children.
“A rocket !” Replied the vast majority. What can we say? It was a challenge!
We made our first space station and it was a great success, with
lots of “astronauts” visiting and recording things in the log book.
Then, a new piece of furniture arrived. ” Let’s add it to the space station! ” we thought. A great success was born. It has lead us in many different directions. We now have space discussions and can tell you all about the moon and gravity. Amazing!
Our wonderful P6 teacher, Mr Tyler, came to read some space books to us today. He loves all things science , but especially space. We got to ask him quesrtions too, such as ” What is the Moon made of?” and ” How can I be an astronaut? ” He is so clever, that he knew all of our answers!
He read us two stories – ” The Way Back Home” by Oliver Jeffers and “On The Moon” by Anna Melbourne and Benjit Davies. They were really good.
We are learning all about symmetry this week. We talked about the line of symmetry and how each side must be identical. We used lots of different resources and loose parts to stimulate our creativity. We demonstrated some brilliant ideas. Mission accomplished!
Our Mystery Reader was a real surprise to one person in the class! Lily’s Mum came in to read to us today and Lily didn’t know a thing! Lily was amazed! Her mum read us two wonderful books- ” Nora… the girl who ate and ate” by Andrew Neale and Ben Corr and “Spinderella” by Julia Donaldson and Sébastien Braun. They were great stories . Thank you, Mrs Nixon, for coming in today.
We were very lucky today to have our Lollypop people Sandra and Kenny visit us to show us how to cross the road safely. We got to try on Kenny’s jacket and hold his lollypop stick. It was quite heavy. We practised being the Lollypop person. We drew pictures of them and made traffic lights. We read about Ziggy too, who helped to keep everyone safe on the road. We learned so much today. Thank you, Kenny and Sandra!
