Our Discovery Tables have differed in the last two weeks.
Last week’s table focused on looking closely at natural objects. It is amazing what you can see under a magnifying glass!
Our next Discovery Table was full of shiny objects. We had to take a close look at ourselves in them. They made us look very different. We also shone torches on them to discover what happens.
We read Jack and The Beanstalk as part of our Social Studies topic. We have planted our seeds, made the castles, written about it and drawn the pictures. There never seems to be a moment in 1.4 when we aren’t busy. 👍
We have learned about parts of flowers by looking at real flowers, pulling them apart and naming them. We then looked at TigTag Jr , which showed us all about the cycle of flowers from seeds. We then made our own flowers to include petals, stems, leaves and pollen.
We have been learning letter sounds “a”, “s”, “t”, “p”, “n”, “i” , “c” and “k”. We can now blend them together and read and make words such as “cat”, “pin” and “pick”. We used our chopped wood loose parts to make our words then someone suggested that we try our names….
Our runner beans and sunflowers are starting to grow. We got out the magnifying glasses to look closely at the stems and leaves. We will keep watering them every day.
We had a child In the class crying for no apparent reason. They were quickly comforted by another child voluntarily, who told them, “Why are you crying? We are having so much fun!” He stopped crying and joined in. It made our day. 😁
This week’s “Mystery Reader” was Mrs Donnelly, who is our lovely Depute Head Teacher for P1 and P2. She read “Super Pants” by Steve Smallman and Dee Biscoe. It was very good. We listened very carefully.
We started growing things in class today. We all planted sunflower seeds and runner bean seeds. We will look at them every day and watch them grow. We will measure our sunflower stems with cubes and make a graph with them.
We also looked closely at lots of different items on the Discovery Table. We could see the pollen in Mrs Arbuckle’s sunflowers; the rings on the cut wood; the patterns on shells; the lines on the nuts and bolts and the pattern on the gems. It was amazing to see!
Science is great fun!
We have had a great start to our year and the children are all very happy in class.
Thank you for your assistance on Day One. All of the children have settled into the routine of unpacking their bags and ordering lunch with remarkable ease.
Just a few reminders:
Please label everything belonging to your child. We have already have some unnamed unclaimed waterproof jackets in class. A lot of the school jackets look the same , so a named label really helps your child to identify their property. ( Write it on pen on the label. Printed labels often fall off after a few wears.)
Accidents do happen in class. This is normal school life in Primary One! If your child is sent home with fresh clothes, can you please wash them and return them as soon as possible as we are in short supply.
A few parents have spoken to us about their child’s dietary requirements. Our school lunch menu always has halal options. Please note that we are a ” nut free” school.
If you have written a note in your child’s diary, please remind them to show us. We do check the diaries, but some children forget to leave them out for us to see and we can miss out on important information.

Every week we will have a “Mystery Reader” arrive in the 1.4 ” Reading Garden”. They will read a book that they love and share with the children. This encourages the children to foster a love of reading and realize that lots of people love to read!
This week’s “Mystery Reader” was Mrs McConnalogue, who is one of our fantastic Principal Teachers. She read ” When A Monster Is Born” by Sean Taylor and Nick Sharratt. It was such a good book and we all joined in with ” …There are two possibilities!”
