We learn maths in many different ways. Sometimes, we listen to instructions; some days we cut and stick and some days, we play. Whatever we do, we always have fun learning.
It was very exciting this morning, as our classroom had changed! Some things were still the same, but we had lots of new areas to explore.
Sometimes, the children tell us funny stories and sometimes they ask us questions that have obviously been bothering them.
This week’s question to Mrs Arbuckle:” Why do you always have your hair down?” It was a fair enough question. I’m afraid I’m not as good as her mummy at doing hair! My homework this week will be practising plaits and buns….. 😁
This week’s Mystery Reader gave lots of clues to his identity!! Was he a bird? Was he a plane? No! He was Mrs Arbuckle’s “little ” boy, Gavin! He read ” Where’s My Bear?” by Jez Alborough with “Big Bear”. ” Big Bear” has travelled the world with Gavin since he was a baby. He is still a very special bear.
We had a fantastic afternoon yesterday imagining we were Goldilocks! We were very brave and sampled the three bears porridge. Daddy bear’s porridge was far too salty and we all agreed it didn’t taste very nice. Mummy bear’s porridge was too sugary and baby bear’s porridge was just right.
We also tried sitting on the bear’s chairs to see which chair was the most comfortable! For the taller pupils in the class, daddy’s chair was fine but for the shorter pupils in the class it was far too big.
We also created portraits of Goldilocks using beautiful golden wool for her hair. What a busy afternoon!
It is definitely autumn now. We have noticed that it is colder in class in the morning when the doors open and the wind blows into our class! We do, however, continue to work outdoors when the weather permits, as it is such a great environment to learn in.
Please ensure that your child comes to school with a jacket. Playtimes and lunchtimes are beginning to get harsh with only a jumper or a cardi on. We have also noticed that some children are already wearing their winter jackets. ( Us too!) In wet weather, children are welcome to change out of wellies in class and into their shoes ( or wear their gym shoes). On icy or snowy days, every step is taken by our brilliant janitors to create safe paths to our door. Again, hats, gloves, scarves and snow boots are recommended and boots can be changed in class. Remember to label everything!
We love maths in P1.4 and this week has been no exception. We have been learning to count and write numbers with “El Nombre” – you must know his song by now! We have been practicing to count and write to and from 10 and measured our runner beans using cubes for non standard units.
This week, we have focused on days of the week, seasons, and months. We sorted different items into seasons and then sorted our birthdays into seasons. ( That was tricky!) We made a pictograph with our information. We discovered that the most popular season to have a birthday is in winter.
All classes in the school participate in the Daily Mile. It is so good for the children to get out and exercise. If we were to walk round our pitch four times, it would be a whole mile. However, we are small and have little legs, so we have only walked round it once. We follow the yellow line all the way round so that we all stay together. Once we get better, we can walk faster or run. We will build this up quickly, adding extra sections until we will get to a mile. We have found since starting the Daily mile, that children are much more focused in class, having used up their energy in the fresh air.
Although we call it the Daily Mile, we don’t actually do it everyday! We try to do it as often as possible, but our weather often stops us. We don’t walk in the rain, ice/ snow, wind or heat. We will go out in the snow to build snowmen as it doesn’t happen every day! ( Wrap up and remember snow boots to wear to school. They can be changed in class. Teachers do it too!)
The sun shone, so we took the chance to go outside and write our phonics on the ground in chalk. We even started to blend some letters together! We can recognise sat, pin, net etc. Ask your child to write letters and sound them out. They might even see and sound out the words at bedtime stories. Remember only to use the sounds we know!
